We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Fox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
As a mom, I feel like I’ve always supported my children’s uniqueness and support their passions without putting too much pressure on them.

What I lack in financial investments I make up for with investing time and money in my children.  So far it has paid off with millions of returns – they are so fabulous and interesting!

It’s so amazing to see my kids discover who they are. I want them to be passionate about life. My kids feel very loved and appreciated….and I think that makes them feel confident and safe in the world.  They are awesome – good people, I feel blessed every day to get to enjoy them as much as I do!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My first art was music. I was a musician and songwriter for about a decade. I never considered myself a very visual person, but on a trip to India,  I started getting into photography – I wanted to capture my experience.

Music is my precious art. When I write music, it’s all about me and my experiences…and frankly, it’s an art form I create only for myself to love.  I consider it my more selfish art.

With photography, it’s just the opposite. It’s all about the people and subjects I am capturing. Making sure my clients are happy and collaborating to create images that capture the soul of who they are or what they have created.  I love the collaborative process but I also love taking charge when people are shy and uncomfortable – turning that around.  At the end of the day, I feel so proud to leave people with memories of the happiest milestones and creations they love.  Photography is more of my selfless art, and ultimately, I prefer doing that for a living!

I think I am just so passionate about photography and have so much fun doing it that it makes the photo taking process really fun for my clients. When my clients tell me at the end of a shoot that they are shocked they had such a good time…that makes me feel great!  Photoshoots SHOULD be fun!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to Shoutout to my amazing Dad, Norman Fox. He was a doo wop singer in high school and had the first interracial recorded rock group in history – Norman Fox and the Rob Roys. He had a few hit songs but his career was pretty much over once he graduated from high school. He became a business man after that…but always encouraged my brother and I to pick careers we loved – not to focus on money. Then he got two artists, poor guy! So, be careful what you wish for I guess!!! 😂. But seriously, he is very proud of my brother (who is a very accomplished classical conductor) and I and is so fun and supportive.

I also want to credit the book Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie and India.  In 1997, I read that book and made a decision to go to India somehow, someway. I willed it and by some miracle, I got there. That trip really changed my perspective on the world, the human psyche, the roots of happiness and misery – it was my intro into Buddhist philosophy which is a huge part of my life today. India inspired me to start taking photographs because I wanted to capture my experience … .As Alanis says “Thank you, India”!
