We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Polinder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, how do you think about risk?
I don’t like risk-taking in any form. Perhaps I’m abnormal as a business owner in that regard. Security and stability have always been a high priority for me. When it came to switching careers from an IT engineer to a relationship coach, I took the path that involved the least risk possible. Meaning, I kept my day job while completing my two masters degrees and building my coaching practice. I was hustling while I burned the candle on both ends, but the peace of mind it offered me was well worth it. Our ability to take risks–and the root of anxiety–boils down to our belief that we’re capable. Capable of the task at hand and capable of pivoting in the face of reversals and setbacks. I don’t believe you have to take wild risks to start a business. Lay the groundwork, do your research, and learn how to hustle.

What should our readers know about your business?
My career as a relationship coach started out as a hobby. I was voted the Peacemaker in 5th grade, so I’ve always had a reputation for wanting to resolve conflict between people. I started coaching others informally, offering my services for free because I loved it so much. This eventually led to a masters in Spiritual Psychology, and I have now completed a second masters in Clinical Mental Health, with the intention of being licensed in CA. I now own a coaching practice with three coaches who I employ and mentor. My practice took off with the rise of my social media following, now at over 400,000 followers across social media platforms. Posting videos and reels was the last thing I wanted to do, but then one of my first reels on breakups for couples went viral. The biggest lesson in all of this is to try new things, even if you’re kicking and screaming doing it. In our world of AI and social media “fame,” you never know how your business will be able to thrive utilizing tech that is accessible to all of us. The playing field has now been evened. Before diving into social media marketing, be sure to conceptualize your brand. What problem are you solving for others? For me, my brand is centered around couples communication. One of the core pieces of being successful in a relationship is understanding your triggers and how you can heal your past to show up in a more effective way for your partner. So often, I see partners drowning in trauma responses and the unhealed pain of their past being projected onto their partner. Sure, we might have romantic partners we are destined to be with, but we can certainly sabotage this destiny with the land mines of our past.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the beach! I grew up in Seattle and have always been surrounded by water. When I vacation, I try to stay near the water as well, and I haven’t met many people who would turn down an afternoon by the ocean. I’m a vegan, so the visit would also involve hitting up Higher Taste, Seabirds, or cooking a delicious meal at home. Southern CA has so many great day trip options, so I imagine my friend and I would not be staying in one area the entire time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The career I’m passionate about took off once I started to heal my trauma in a tight-knit community of friends and mentors. So much of what holds us back are our core wounds and how we respond to stress and challenges, regardless of the career we pursue. Experiencing trust, loyalty, and integrity from others gave me the confidence to believe I could achieve my goals as a business owner. My success was only possible with the love and support of Tukaram Das and the Long Beach crew I am fortunate to be a part of.
