We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Spurkel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

My mother was my inspiration.  She worked hard all her life and for over 20 years she owned and operated a very successful sewing business.

I wanted a business that gave me flexibility to spend time with my family while also gaining fulfillment on a personal level.

One evening I was attending a local party in Venice Beach, and I was standing in this line waiting for something that smelled amazing. It sounds silly, but I’ll never forget that moment when I took a bite of this fresh hot mini donut I thought, wow, this is the best thing I’ve ever eaten.  It gave me the biggest smile, and it was at this moment that I knew I wanted to have this as a business.

When starting my business, I thought this could be a way to have a positive connection with others in my community.  I always enjoy being behind my mini donut station, interacting while making my mini donuts and serving them to the guests.  Everyone is always happy, smiling, and pleasant. The satisfaction I get when I see people eating the donuts and laughing and enjoying themselves or telling me that this is the best thing at the party is what brings me joy and why I still love this business after almost 10 years now.

Please tell us more about your business.

Dazzling Donuts is a mini donut catering company where we make fresh mini donuts at events.  The guests get to see the mini donuts as they are being made right in front of them and they are served right on the spot.  Nothing tastes better than donuts that are served fresh and at the perfect temperature.

What sets your business apart from others?

What sets us apart is that our donuts are small bite size donuts that are the perfect appetizer size treats for any event.  It’s much more elegant to bite into a small donut than a big one, especially at weddings and other social gatherings.

We also have 24 flavors on our Dazzling Menu.  I wanted to offer flavors that people would be familiar with such as s’mores, cinnamon roll and cookies-n-cream. There is nothing better than having these flavors added on top of an already delicious, warm, donut.  Take one bite and it’s an instant smile.  This is where I got the tag line “We make donuts, we make smiles” I know if you eat our freshly made mini donuts, you will have a smile on your face.

What are you most proud of in your business?

There are probably two things I’m most proud of. First, learning how to run and operate a small business on my own.  If someone told me how hard and physically demanding having a mini donut catering business would be, I probably would have run in the other direction.  Sometimes, what you don’t know is a good thing.  The other thing I’m most proud of is that I am able to employ others.  I love my team, and I aim to hire good-hearted individuals that also enjoy seeing the people we serve happy and having a good time. I believe that having a great team that shares in that vision resonates through to the guests we serve.

I am so humbled by the clients we have had and the special life events I’ve been able to be a part of including milestone birthdays, wedding receptions, and bar mitzvah/bat mitzvahs.  I’ve also enjoyed working for many movie studios and organizations including Universal, Sony, Warner Bros and Nickelodeon and being at some of the hottest events in Hollywood like Oscar parties, MTV Movie Awards, wrap parties and movie premieres. And some of Hollywood’s biggest stars have invited me and my donut station into their homes when they had parties.

How did you get to where you are today business-wise? Was it easy?

I’m not afraid of hard work because I have a passion for business and the drive to succeed. Focusing on that passion is how I’ve overcome the challenges I have encountered. It was not always easy, it’s still not easy.  My first year in business there were many times I wanted to quit, but I kept pushing forward while learning from my mistakes and challenging myself to do the best job possible.  I spent many late nights lying awake, thinking of ways to make my business run better.  I believe in the saying that change is constant, and for me I wanted that change to mean progress.  To this day, I still spend a fair amount of time reflecting on ways to improve my business, and to be a better more effective business owner.

What are you most excited about in your business?

The one thing I’m most excited about is the new service we will be offering this Spring which is our mini donut ice cream sundae bar.  The idea was inspired by my daughter who loves my donuts, but also really loves ice cream.  She has never really liked birthday cake all that much, so this past year I made her a mini donut ice cream sundae instead. It was a hit! She loved it, and everyone else did too.  So that’s how I came up with another handheld treat for parties. Like many, I have had more time at home in the last several months, so I have been able to really focus on perfecting the recipe until I was completely satisfied with the flavor combination. Along with the new sundae, we also have a new website, a new logo, a new look, and for the first time ever we are offering deliveries of mini donut gift boxes perfect for employee appreciation and community drive by events.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?

I’m a perfectionist, and I’ve had to learn to master the art of imperfection. I have decided that like no two mini donuts are the same, being unique is better than being perfect.  I’ve had to learn to be more patient as a leader as I believe that with love and patience anything is possible.  I have learned how to embody that belief more in the way I lead my team.  I pour my heart and soul into my business, and so I’ve learned to be more patient under pressure as there is a lot that goes into each event or party to make everything appear seamless.  We are a team and demonstrating kindness through patience and consideration not only has a positive impact on others but has a direct effect on myself. I used to focus on working harder, but now I focus a lot on how those who work for me perceive me as the leader of our team.

Also, I’ve learned to find opportunities within hardships. When the pandemic hit in 2020 my events business came to a screeching halt. I became overwhelmed by the uncertainty of it all, but I kept reminding myself that in business and in life sometimes you must deal with tough challenges while looking for the opportunities that are also present. I decided to take this opportunity to reinvent my business as I discussed before. I am also doing what I always have done, and what I know my mother would do, just keep pushing forward. I feel excited for the future and the opportunity to share all the new things I’ve been working on with my community.

What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

I would like the world to know that if you are passionate about your work, and you pour all your love into your dream by working to continuously improve while mastering the art of patience, there is very little you can’t achieve. Even in complicated times like these you can find ways to follow your dream. Believe in yourself even when you feel overwhelmed by your obstacles and show that belief by always aspiring to do your best.

Our mission statement sums up our brand, we provide the freshest donuts to our community and bring a smile to everyone we serve.

I believe this is one of the ways that I contribute to this world, because we all could use more reasons to smile. And when this pandemic is over and the world is opening up again, Dazzling Donuts will be ready!
