We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
As a mother of 3 girls. I think one of the most important things I can share with them is my humaneness. I have shared repeatedly how important it is to care for the world around them. I have also told them how much I love my career and all the benefits it has given me as a mother. Obviously as a women, financial independence is important and something that is mine outside the home. I love my job. My daughters see the rewards and benefits. They also see the challenges . I do my best and keep it real with them. They have gone along for the ride. Without them, none of it would matter.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started in the film business at a young age. I knew I wanted to work behind the scenes in management. I worked with directors and writers and actors and packaged independent films. Jumping into the fashion and advertising side of the business was very organic. I am basically doing the same thing. When a client or producer comes to us with a project, my goal is suggest the whole team – set designer, fashion stylist, and beauty. Curating a roster that is unique, balanced and varied, has allowed me to work with many different clients. The LA office is 10 years old, we grew the roster from the ground up. I think the lessons are simple, connect with the talent, clients and producers. A hard job is going to end and the next one may be easier or hard in different ways. Budgets are a lot different than they were 20 years ago, 10 years ago and 2 years ago. I love images and building relationships.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If we had a week, we would take a road trip up the coast – Pismo stop, Cambria and Paso Robles, defnitely Big Sur. Dinner at the Big Sur Bakery. I love SF, the city gives me so much energy. Dinner and drinks at the Slanted Door. I love Pt Reyes and have favorite spots in Larkspur too. I would stop for the lemon pizza at Farmshop -its insane, Clic store for home goods and dresses.. If its a quick trip, I love entertaining at home. Bringing family and friends together with good music fun cocktails, delicious home cooked meals by my husband. When we do go out, we have our favorites. Felix, in Venice where we live Best Italian outside of Italy or maybe in Italy… Escuela Taqueria in Hollywood.. Luckys in Malibu. I love going Downtown, after a walk around the Broad museum, some shopping at the Row, lunch at Central Market.or Bar Ama Mexican. I also love a hotel bar. always.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have always surrounded myself with strong women since I was a young. I have a rock star group of women on the roster but outside of work, I always make time for my girlfriends. I am inspired by successful women and I love to watch their careers explode. Women having women backs is a big thing for me. But If I wear to give a shout out to two important supporters of me, I would say firstly my husband, Gabrael, his love and support has encouraged me to go for it,. Gabrael has always given me the space I needed to be present at work even when I have to bring home half the work. Walter Schupfer, my boss, my friend has believed in me and allowed me to grow into my own voice. Its not often working under someones umbrella you get to see your own vision and own success. I have always appreciated his encouragement and trust. I know this business is filled with people only looking out for their best interests, lucky me – I have found a team that is by my side and doing it together.
