We had the good fortune of connecting with Knowpa Slaps and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Knowpa, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in El Salvador and came to the US when I was 6. I lived in Southern California and moved to SF when I was 18.
Being an immigrant in this country has strongly shaped who I am today. When I was younger I constantly felt like I didn’t belong so I really strive to create inclusive spaces for all people to feel welcome. I was an undocumented immigrant for many years as well so while that held me back from doing many things that I wanted to do when I was younger, I’ve also used it as motivation to work twice as hard now that I’m able to.
I will always remember what life was like as an undocumented immigrant, and I’ll never take any of this for granted.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
R&B and RIBS is a day party I started in 2018, we invite the best DJs from all over to come throw down their best R&B sets while our chef friends cook for us.
I was a chef in SF for over a decade. I cooked in the mornings and DJ’d at night. I always wanted to find a way to bring both of these worlds together, where all my chef friends got to party with my DJ friends. My best friend Eric is still a chef in the city and he handles the food aspect of the party, I take care of the music side.
It’s been a beautiful thing to watch this idea I had grow organically over the last few years. Listening to music and eating are my 2 favorite things to do, I’m glad a lot of other people agree.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love ABV in the mission. grab a cocktail and some grilled mushrooms. They serve food late night too.
White cap out by the beach is worth the drive for a good cocktail.
Eric makes some of the best Pizza in SF, he runs OUTTA SIGHT pizza out of Fig & Thistle Wine Bar, get a side of ranch and some white wine.
Madrone Art Bar is basically my living room, I DJ and hang out there often. come visit ne
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
DJs Gordo Cabeza and Audio 1 were both OGs in the game that have given me a lot of confidence over the years. Audio 1 gave me props on some of the first couple edits/blends that I made and encouraged me to keep making more. Gordo was one of the first DJs I looked up to that told me I was a really good DJ. Both of these words of encouragement from DJs I admired meant a lot to me
also my homie Jonathan Mendoza taught me a lot about how to properly throw a party/event, to think outside the box when promoting your party. That it wasn’t just about throwing a flier on social media and hoping people would come but that throwing a good party took a lot of time and effort and DJing was just a small part of the total package.
