We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Hurd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was a reader when I was younger, much more than kids my age. I spent a lot of time at the library. sometimes I went on weekends as an escape. Diving into a good book was the best way to transport somewhere else. I started writing poetry when I was in middle school. I found it to be a great release for how I was feeling at the time. So, storytelling is something that has naturally been in me. Writing my 1st novel was something I did for fun. I enjoyed the process and also enjoyed people’s reactions when reading my work. Hitting publish on that book lit a fire under me. I wanted to tell the other stories in my head so becoming a published author was a no brainer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe all creatives are artists. Creating something that started out as an idea is a magical thing. I like to create using real life. In my adult contemporary romance novels along with my children’s book (coming soon), I strive to make my characters relatable. When I write about a person finding love or a little black girl going through life, I want people to feel it in a way that resonates. I am not where I’d like to be professionally but I will get there. It’s not easy for me to write as much as I’d like to but I will continue to carve out creative time. I’ve learned that being consistent helps a lot. For me, that’s not always easy working a regular 9-5 and being a full-time parent. But I’d like the world to know that you should do whatever is important to you. Do whatever fills you up and brings you joy. For me, one of those things is creating.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, this question is kind of hard for me because I am a homebody. I enjoy spending my free time with family and friends.
Because it’s become more of the trend in recent years I do enjoy trying new food trucks. Bleu kitchen,(the court cafe), Happy Ice,, Mr.fries Guy to name a few and all of those places also have brick and mortor locations. There are so many in the city, you just have to find what you like. I also like going to the beach. Not a trendy beach like Venice but quiet beaches. Or somewhere to just talk around like exposition park to the museums. We have a lot of gems in the surroung cities.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Eric Jerome Dickey (may he rest in peace) is an author who motivated me to write black love stories. I don’t feel like we are always represented in a favorable light and we don’t always see ourselves represented in love stories. Eric did that in a way that made his characters relatable. I felt like I knew those people and couldn’t wait to read his next book. I hope readers feel this way about my artistry. I always want the people I write about to feel like you or someone you know. Fictional, yet real at the same time. Also, I’ve said this often but Christina C. Jones , or CCJ as she’s known to her readers is another author who helped motivate me. In the beginning, I believe we motivated each other, as we started at the same time. She continues to inspire me to do what I love and I will forever be grateful for her support and friendship.
