We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin & Jamie Schuppert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristin & Jamie, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
It really started when we were getting settled into our apartment in Venice back in 2019. We wanted to decorate with authentic home decor, but found that the pieces we really loved were way out of our budget. Around that same time, we took a trip to visit a friend in Turkey and fell in love with the beauty and character of the ceramics by local artisans. After that trip, my sister and I began sourcing one-of-a-kind, reclaimed and antique pieces from Turkish vendors throughout the country.
This led to us launching Terra Coastal in 2023 — making it our mission to bring authentic home decor to the U.S. without the crazy markups.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We provide affordable, authentic home decor that’s sourced and hand-picked from around the world. Every piece is one-of-a-kind and handmade by local artisans, each with it’s own character and story. Our mission is to provide these pieces at a price that’s fair to both our customers and our partners.
We’re really looking forward to expanding our product offerings. This year, we introduced 100% Turkish Linens with colorways inspired by nature’s coastal hues and tones from our antique vessels. We’ll be introducing a new candle this year, which has been one of our most-loved pieces to date.
We’ve learned so many lessons — too many to list, however the most important one is to move at a pace that works well for you and your business. With social media, it’s so easy to think that brands blew up overnight, yet that is rarely ever the case. I think it’s also important to be ultra-cautious of how you spend your money. In the beginning, you really have to get creative on how your dollars are allocated — this will look different for every business!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
After they get off the plane, we’re going straight to Dudley Market in Venice for some wine and local seafood. That place is such a vibe and never misses. On a Saturday, I love taking friends to Abbot Kinney to grab a coffee and walk through Artists & Fleas, then head to Malibu for a hike at Los Liones. After a good sweat, we’d stop at Endless Color in Topanga for a slice of pizza and a glass of natural wine.
Is it the weekend yet?!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, we have to give a shoutout to our boyfriends, who have helped us with hauling heavy, fragile pieces all throughout Los Angeles. From flea markets, to our customer’s homes, to and from storage and beyond. Without them, more blood, sweat and tears would be had.
And of course, we have to give a shout to our friend Jon in Turkey, who connected us to the local artisans we now work with there to really kick off our imported goods journey. These types of vendors aren’t ones you can just find on the internet, so it’s been really great to have someone on the grounds to help us communicate and find the best vintage pieces to source.
