We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Thegreat and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristin, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue a creative career because I was born to create! For me, it wasn’t a decision, I knew that was who I was and what I was supposed to do. I had no doubts.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I create, numbered, limited edition fashion collections. I also create costumes and style for select clients.
I studied fine art, dance, and classical voice. I like to put all of my artistic experiences into my work. I create my own textile prints from my abstract sketches.
Aside from that, what has set me apart in fashion design is my decision NOT to use fasteners. This design sensibility is what put me on the proverbial map.
Of course, my career has not been without it’s challenges and judgments.
But, I’m also a punk. So, criticism fuels me. Fitting in scares me and my punk card would surely be revoked!
Challenges come and go and you have address them one thing at a time. Finances, loss, creative lethargy, depression, etc. No matter what, never give up. Ever!
One of the most important lessons I learned at the very start of my career, was that you have to love everything about what you do. Especially, the process. Not just the pretty parts. If you can love all of those elements, you will always be successful.
My brand message is all about sustainability and giving back.
I am currently in the process of opening my first design studio with the intention of creating opportunities to give back to the arts community, focusing on the creative youth and creatives in need. I am currently seeking investors who align with my vision and would like to help accelerate and actualize this mission!
I have always said that I want my brand to be enjoyed, interpreted by the individual, and I want you to imagine! I want everyone to feel magical and special, because that is what they are!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting me, I would take them to most beautiful nature spots, to the sea, to grab delicious fresh fruits and crunchy snacks! Later, we might grab a drink at my favorite restaurant and after, have a few glasses at mi casa! The best parties are had in my kitchen! Music, drinks, laughs, good conversations, and epic vibes!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to Shoutout anyone who has ever been made to feel weird, like they don’t fit in, and who have been bullied for being unique. My goal is to inspire people to be themselves, to live out loud, and be proud of their own uniqueness and individuality.
Along with that, I believe in practicing gratitude and being mindful everyday for all that I have been able achieve thus far. I am thankful for my mom, my family, my mentors, my dear friends, my creative community, and complete strangers. I feel blessed to be able to do what I love, to be guided, and supported. I am truly grateful each and everyday.
