We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristine Skeate and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristine, what makes you happy? Why?
What makes me happy is helping others. I find the older I get the more I can be of service the more joy it brings to my life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has taken a few very interesting turns over the years….. like previously mentioned I started my certification training with Maria Leone and The Physical mind institute in 1999. I worked as an instructor for a few different pilates studios at the beginning of my career looking for the right fit for me.
During this time I had just gotten married and wanted to start a family right away. Unfortunately we had trouble trying to conceive. And after 4 years of trying we decided to open our own pilates studio. And wouldn’t you know it!!!- 3 mos after our grand opening I was pregnant!!! We were elated to say the least. I work/trained my whole pregnancy and then our daughter Sofia. I stayed home with her for about a month and then just started bringing her to the studio – it was great.
Then when Sofia was 15 mos old I got pregnant again with our son Henry. This pregnancy was tough on me and with my new responsibility as a mother we decided to sell the studio. It was a hard but necessary decision.

I continued to practice pilates but didn’t go back to teaching until 2011 when both my children we in school. I worked in a beautiful studio and was regaining my clients again.

Then one year into my new teaching schedule my son developed a seizure disorder. (I won’t go too far into the details – unless you’d like me to).

During this time it was clear I needed to leave teaching at the studio and focus on my son and my family. So during this time a practiced pilates and started in-home private training.

In my efforts to figure out what was going on with my son and trying to find a homeopathic path for him, because all the medication that the doctors were giving him gave him terrible side effects…… I found my love for essential oils and energy healing with Reiki. I became an advocate for healing with essential oils. I was able to ween my son off medication and subside his seizures with specific essential oils.
So proud to state that Henry hasn’t had a seizure in 7 years and has been medication free for 6 1/2 years.

As the years went by I continued to train clients in their homes and began my reiki healing.

Two years ago I went back to studio teaching and regained my clientele.

I’m currently working in a studio called Misfit pilates. I’m also in the process of building an ADU on my property to train pilates privately, essential oil and reiki healing.
My plan is to go digital. I would like to create a library of streaming workouts in my studio space.

Onepercentbetterpilates is my brand. My goal is to motivate my clients to be 1% better everyday.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well since we live in LA we have so many wonderful choices!!
I love a festival or a fair…. I’m vegan so the vegan street fair is a place an always bring my friends.

I also love Santa Barbara. There’s a magical place called Sacred spaces that is do lovely.

We could take a bike ride through Ojai and get massages at the Ojai valley inn.

We could get up early on a Sunday morning and visit the Self Relaxation Fellowship in the pacific palisades and take in the beauty of Lake Shrine and feel the amazing energy there.

Then maybe we head off to Korea town for salt scrubs!!!

I’d also love to take in a meditation at the Owls nest in Malibu.

Oh and I love walking the stairs in Culver City and taking in the beautiful views at the top!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mentor is Maria Leone owner/instructor of Bodylinela pilates studio in Beverly Hills. I began my pilates training with Maria in 1999. I just recently attended one of her mentorship weekends, and was re-inspired by her all over again. To be in her presence is to be in the presence of excellence. Her training has definitely shaped me as a knowledgable instructor.
