We had the good fortune of connecting with KT Jenkinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi KT, why did you pursue a creative career?
Quite frankly I never imagined doing anything other than something creative. I always knew, even when I was a child, that I would pursue this type of path. I was very fixated on becoming a photo journalist when I was younger and imagined myself working for National Geographic like Paul Nicklen. As I got older I realized I am much more interested in being a fine artist, but the core of my desires has always been the same.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a multidisciplinary artist with a practice that centers around portrait photography and quilting. I am an analog photographer who documents my queer community and the joy that comes along with these identities and relationships. I view the quilting aspect of these projects as a form of “queering” the images.
I am currently working on establishing myself in the art world and am still learning a lot, but the primary lesson I have learned is to do everything I can to form connections with the people around me, and the rest will follow.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whenever I have friends or family in town I take them to Cafe Nido for coffee! I also adore Griffith Park and typically take visitors on hikes around the canyons there. People are always surprised by how much nature is accessible in the city so I feel like the beach and the parks are my favorite places to take people.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My art is focused on my queer community, which spans the United States from the North East to the South and all the way to California. I would not be able to be the person I am or make the art I do if not for all of these folks. Therefore, my dedication to all of those who I am in kith and community with.
