Meet Kurt Yaeger | Actor, Writer, Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kurt Yaeger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kurt, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Tenacity. Never giving up. Now, that doesn’t mean you just keep on doing the same thing over and over again. I’ve given up on ideas, projects, people, pathways I thought would work but I reformulated how to approach the same problem; i.e. pivoted. Tenacity allows you to try hard enough, and long enough to learn the key factors of what you’re doing wrong, then you adjust your ideas or methodology, and try, try again.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an actor, a writer and a director, but also, I have a disability, and so some people think I couldn’t be all of those things.. I am an amputee from a pretty rough motorcycle accident. I’ve fought through the industry’s exclusion of disabled talent and turned the idea that a disability is a flaw into a valuable experience of mine that no one else gets to have. It’s a funny thing to learn that your weaknesses are your strengths. An actor’s job is to put humanity on camera, warts and all. Whatever human flaws I have, I learned are not flaws for acting, which helped me understand that flaws aren’t even flaws, they’re just uneven emotional, physical or psychological responses to past trauma, and can be very valuable in the right circumstance, or very destructive in the wrong circumstances. So the idea is to learn how to identify your flaw’s power by asking; when are your flaws useful? Great! Now, put that in a “valuable when” category, and work on not using the flaw in other circumstances, which makes that specific “skill, a flaw.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the best and newest spots in town is The Bike Shed. It’s Located in the Arts District of Downtown LA, and its a crazy amalgamation of amazing food, a spot for motorcyclists to have private parking at, they have a tattoo shop with big time artist, an events space that is huge, and just a killer vibe. I would pop in there first, and then take my friends on rides up into the twisties of Mulholland and land at the Rock Store for a lunch, or up the Crest to land at the now defunct Newcomb’s Ranch, or a little further (and better ride) out to The Rock Inn. Obviously, I ride motorcycles, so my friends probably do to.
There are so many great rides in So. Cal, but now, the place to start a ride or end a ride, is The Bike Shed.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My literary manager, Shelli Margheritis at Independent Artist Entertainment is a PIT BULL! She pushes doors open with a battering ram and has created so many opportunities for me, that would otherwise never have taken place. She also has a magical way of being supportive when you’re down, putting her personality into her work, and yet is a total badass pit bull. Love her. Love you, Shelli!
