We had the good fortune of connecting with Kutloano Headbsh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kutloano, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
In essence, risk-taking has been the undercurrent of my journey. It has allowed me to grow as an artist and as an individual, continuously learning and adapting. It has taught me the value of trusting my instincts, embracing uncertainty, and the importance of perseverance. Without risk, there can be no reward, and it is this belief that has propelled me forward, serving as a major driving force to pursue my dreams.
As a storyteller, trusting your vision and ideas can feel like a huge risk. However, I have learned that being courageous enough to trust your thoughts and ideas to take you where you dream to be allows you to carve a path that is uniquely yours, marked by innovation, authenticity, and profound personal fulfillment. Choosing to tell stories close to my heart has required me to get over certain fears, but daring to tell stories that challenge me as a writer and performer has helped shape me as an artist for the better. In this way, risk-taking has been a catalyst for my creativity.
My transition from Johannesburg to the heart of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles embodies the essence of risk-taking. It required a leap of faith, leaving behind the familiar comforts of home for the vast unknown of Hollywood. With this came opportunities and experiences that developed my artistic pursuits, exposing me to different perspectives, and cultures. This has positively impacted my adaptability and resilience.
As an actor, I’ve sought out characters that challenge me, pushing me out of my comfort zone and allowing me to explore complex emotions and narratives. This has aided in broadening my range and sharpening my skill as an actor.
The entrepreneurial aspect of my career in Los Angeles has also been fraught with risks. Navigating the business side of the industry, from securing funding for independent projects to pitching ideas to studios, requires a balance of creativity, perseverance, and strategic risk-taking. Each rejection and failure has been a lesson in resilience, teaching me that every no brings me closer to a yes. In the end, well-calculated risk can be scary, but also greatly rewarding.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While my professional journey encompasses roles as an actor, writer, and filmmaker, at my core, I identify foremost as a storyteller. Telling stories is at the heart of my craft. It’s something that ties me back to my roots in South Africa where historically, storytellers were not merely entertainers but revered custodians of our cultural heritage and collective history, tasked with preserving and sharing the wisdom of generations past.
My aim and hope in storytelling is to foster unity, inspire change, educate, and entertain among other things. I find myself particularly drawn to the power of storytelling to spark a transformation within the hearts and minds of audiences. Inspiring action or critical thought, that is the hope for my art – to be a catalyst for positive change.
Among other aspirations for my art, I aspire to create a space for discussions on complex topics, hoping to challenge viewers to consider perspectives beyond their own. It’s about more than just entertainment; it’s about sparking change and opening eyes to the realities.
My filmmaking largely revolves around crafting narratives that bring social justice issues to the forefront. One of my recent projects, a film titled “Lapeng” (which means ‘home’ in Sesotho), delves deep into the pressing issue of gender-based violence. This film isn’t just a story; it’s a journey through the eyes of a survivor, exploring her path to seeking justice amidst a myriad of obstacles. “Lapeng” draws inspiration from the devastating reality of gender-based violence and femicide that casts a long shadow over South Africa, aiming to shed light on this crisis and foster meaningful dialogue.
Creating “Lapeng” was a journey of collaboration with an array of incredible talents, each bringing their unique voice and vision to the project. This experience, like many others in my career, has been instrumental in refining my skills as an actor and storyteller.
I’m excited about the journey ahead, eagerly anticipating the projects and challenges that will not further my artistic growth but also connect me with people and experiences where I can make a meaningful impact.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were coming to visit, I’d be thrilled to share with them the mosaic of experiences that have made my time here unforgettable. Being an avid foodie, one of my greatest joys is exploring the diverse culinary landscape this area has to offer. We’d embark on a gastronomic adventure starting at My Thai Kitchen in Koreatown, where the panang curry is a revelation in itself, bursting with flavors that transport you straight to Thailand. Then, we’d switch gears to the heart of Downtown LA, where Manuela serves a roasted duck that’s nothing short of culinary art.
But it’s not just about the food; it’s about the rich tapestry of culture and history encapsulated within LA’s museums. The Peterson Automotive Museum would be a particular highlight, where we, as car enthusiasts, can marvel at the sleek lines and storied pasts of the automobiles on display, many of which starred in our favorite films.
For days when we’re feeling more adventurous and crave the great outdoors, hiking through Runyon Canyon or trekking up to the iconic Hollywood sign would be on the agenda. These hikes offer not only a good workout but also breathtaking views of the city, making them the perfect backdrop for unforgettable memories.
In essence, I’d want to give my best friend a taste of everything that makes this area so special to me—from the culinary delights and cultural treasures to the natural beauty that surrounds us. It’s about sharing those unmatched moments that have defined my experience here, hoping they’ll leave her as enchanted with this place as I am.
