We had the good fortune of connecting with Kya Buggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kya, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a creative career because since a child I have always known that I didn’t want to work a corporate or office job. No disrespect to those that choose that path, but I knew that I stood out from others based on my talent. I can honestly say that making wigs & doing hair really became a safe place for me on some of my darkest days; It’s just something about the satisfaction I get seeing the final product of my work that reminds me that I was put on this earth to make a difference.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart from others is that I genuinely love what I do, I don’t just do hair to make money. I do hair so that others can leave the chair feeling more confident than what they came in. It’s honestly such a wholesome feeling making people feel better about themselves.
I got where I am today with the grace of God & perseverance; As stated previously, my creative talents distracted me from some of my darkest days. It wasn’t always easy of course & it still isn’t but I overcame some of my challenges by being patient through trail & error and not comparing myself to anybody.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As an L.A Native I would recommend stopping by at Brolly Hut for a Double Hamburger & Onion Rings, then make your way down to Leimert Park where I grew up; they’re always having some kind events on the weekends with live music & vendors selling body oils, clothing etc., Also if you are an art lover like myself I’d make my way down to the MOCA aka Museum of Contemporary Art in DTLA. There’s so much more to do in LA of course but these are just the basics that I recommend.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a special shoutout to my Grandma Rubye, who my hair company is named after. Before she passed away, my grandmother was always very supportive of all my creative endeavors whether it was singing or performing art’s she always there watching me in awe with the biggest smile on her face. That gave me the motivation to never dim my light. I also want to give a shout out to my Mom, Dad, & Nana for constantly supporting & reminding that I can do anything I put my mind to.
