Meet Kyle Arana | Designer & Business owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle Arana and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyle, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I created Soulbyrd in 2020 as the world was faced with the scary and uncertain times of the pandemic and as I was going through some personal challenges of my own. Although these times were trying, they pushed me to do a deep dive within and find solace in what I loved doing most, creating. I began spending all my free time designing colorful, fun graphics with an overall positive vibe which inspired me to take the next step and share them with others who may also need some enlightenment.
Trucker-style hats were the perfect medium for me to work with, allowing me to choose any color and match it with uplifting words, phrases or graphics. Also, being a mom of two growing boys living the Southern California lifestyle, hats are essential to my daily wardrobe. Especially in the warmer months when we spend long days at the beach. My hats offer a stylish take on protecting your skin from the sun while spreading good vibes.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Prior to creating Soulbyrd, I worked in the fashion industry for 17 years. Mostly in manufacturing and production. The experience I gained from being in the industry was very helpful when I began developing my own brand. There were definitely challenges I encountered in the process of creating Soulbyrd, but I always tried to maintain focus and keep a positive mindset. The biggest lesson I take with me is to always use patience and never give up. You will always be faced with challenges and hurdles, some of them larger than others, but I’ve learned that every day is a new day; put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward. One of the reasons why I felt inspired to make hats is because I believe hats are an artistic form of Self-Expression, of making a statement or sharing a message. Messages that hopefully uplift and inspire, as this was my intention when creating Soulbyrd.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend in town that I wanted to show around, I would either start the day off with my favorite workout at Box union studio in Santa Monica or by taking a hike at Temescal canyon. I love a good breakfast at Cafe Vida in the Palisades or Malibu Farm, located on the Malibu pier. We would later pack up kids, surfboards, and lunch and head to the beach for the day or do a more adult lunch at either Elephante or Soho in Malibu. One of my favorite dinner spots is Angelini in the Palisades or Georgio Baldi in Santa Monica. I typically head to Abbot Kinney, the Palisades village, or the Malibu Country Mart for the best boutique shopping. For the best local organic produce, I enjoy going to the Palisades farmers market hosted every Sunday. Living in Los Angeles, I am fortunate to be surrounded by many excellent restaurants, beaches, and great shopping. There’s never a lack of things to do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would dedicate this shoutout to my friends and family. I couldn’t have done this without their love and support. I am so thankful for all of the advice and encouragement they gave me along the way.
