Meet Kyle J. Scimone | Screenwriter; Chef

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle J. Scimone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyle J., what inspires you?
You know, I think my main inspiration is not being where I want to be, professionally, financially, creatively, etc. Not that I don’t appreciate the strides I have made, but I’m just inspired to do better. Complacency can be a dangerous thing and I find my inspirations in the day to day tasks that are building my future. And hopefully, I become successful enough that I can create opportunities for others. That’s always the main goal. If you are only in this for yourself, sadly, you’ll probably do well, but it’s a dead end street that serves no purpose for the next generation.
Truth be told, I’ve thought about this question a lot, and its quite profound being for a 5 word sentence…
Which actually encapsulates what inspires me as a writer, like, how impactful can your words be when placed in a certain combination? I’m always trying to figure that out.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a screenwriter and recently, I had my first on-screen appearance while working as assistant director on a short film. We just wrapped filming in Puerto Rico, and now a new murder mystery I am writing is set to film in Miami and Ohio. It was not easy to get to this point and I am no where near where I want to be as a professional writer. But, along the way I have learned to believe in myself, first and foremost. If you don’t believe in yourself or your talent, why on earth would anyone else? It has to start with you.
I also learned that consistency is more important than motivation. I may not be motivated to write 10-15 pages of script after an 8-10 hour shift, but consistently doing it has set me apart from others. I was taught a finished script is worth more than a million dollar idea.
Don’t be that writer that has been working on their one and only project for 5 years.
Be consistent. Be relentless.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have lived in Sherman Oaks for 3 years now and I love it here.
I frequent the archery range near the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve as well as the surrounding golf courses. Lake Balboa and The Japanese Gardens are both great options to kill a few hours during the day. The local hiking trails are abundant and accessible as well.
Since I work as a chef during the day, my go to spots at night are, The Local Peasant, Surly Goat, The Village, Last Call, and Paperback Brewery (Glendale).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are only a few people I want to shoutout outside of my family and friends.
The first one will remain nameless. And that person is my english teacher that failed me multiple times in school. Without that embarrassment and resentment, I may have never took such an interest in it. But success is the best revenge.
Next, was my English professor at Grossmont College in San Diego, California, Jospeh Medina. We used to start the class listening to Muddy Waters, Prince, Rolling Stones, Queen, you name it. It changed my entire perception of school. He was such a cool guy, and was one of the first educators that took the time to pinpoint an individuals talent and skillset. Mr. Medina rebranded education for me and is the reason I transferred to Full Sail University where I got my Bachelor’s in Creative Writing for entertainment.
Lastly, I want to shout out the L.A crew that has helped me get my foot in the door professionally. LPZ media; Emperium Studios in Ohio.
Thank you!
