We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyle Joshua and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always had a vision of creating a brand and being seen as more than just an artist. I used to book sessions for myself as my manger and I would tell them that we didn’t need a producer or engineer. When I would show up, they would realize it was me they were talking to on the phone and that I didn’t need any extra people because I would be doing everything myself. That’s how I first started getting real attention by other engineers, artists and producers around me in the beginning. I believe in ownership and that the artist should own every single aspect that comes from their music including their masters, merch and social media accounts. It makes no sense to spend hours in the studio just to sell it off to people who had no hand in making the records in the first place. If you truly believe in yourself and your vision, retain ownership over everything as long as possible and watch where it gets you.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been making songs and music for over ten years now. I first started in my parents basement on a small karaoke mic with this free recording software program I found on the computer. I made my first track that was fully produced, written, mixed and mastered by myself at age 15. What sets me apart from others is the fact that my records come directly from my mind to your ears. I make most of my music out of my bedroom all by myself which comes from years of trail and error, mixed with failures and personal experiences. .My day to day routine starts with me making a beat, writing to it, recording myself, mixing and then mastering the track all within a few hours. Usually, I have an “almost finished” version of whatever song I started that day because of how much of a routine it’s become for me. The journey certainly hasn’t always been easy and certain trails and tribulations are what led me to taking the independent route that I am taking today. Whether it was dealing with shady producers, clashing with other engineers or just dealing with people switching up, at some point, I remember realizing that it was time for me to forget everyone and focus on doing this myself. I fell back for about two years and started sharpening my production and engineering skills and am now getting ready to drop my first entirely self-produced album this year. The most important lesson I’ve learned on this way up is to always trust yourself first. You know what YOU need to do more than anyone else. It’s your job to simply show them the same vision that you see. If there’s one thing I want people to know about my music, it’s the fact that I’m so connected to it. I’m not just getting sent beats and rhyming a few words together while attempting to call it a “hit”. I am actually sitting here and curating this music from start to finish. I’m producing the beats, sitting there listening to the feeling that I’ve created, then writing the tracks, recording myself, and mixing the final product. My sounds are a true reflection of me. What makes me excited is the fact that I am only getting better everyday.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely have to take them to Monty’s. Thats probably the best vegan burger place in the world. I’ve been vegan for six or so years and my friends know this so when they come to visit they’re always asking me to take them to all the vegan spots around LA so they can see what’s up. Donut Friend is another amazing all vegan donut, coffee and ice cream place that will probably change your life forever honestly. I’d have to take them to the studio because that’s just a part of my everyday life out here. I’d also take them hiking somewhere near Malibu and then end up at the beach.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would definitely dedicate my shoutout to my family. They have been the most supportive people in my life by far. My brother would always push me to be the best version of myself. Sometimes, he would see what I’m capable of before I could even see it myself. I always make it a priority to keep real people around me as well as people who are a reflection of myself and the person I strive to be. Outside of my family, I keep a very small close circle of people who inspire me and vice versa. I love having a team that works towards helping everyone grow as well as people who share real connections that live far passed any business relationship.
