We had the good fortune of connecting with Ladan Sedighi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ladan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
As an American-Iranian who grew up immersed in both cultures, I was deeply influenced by the rich artistic heritage of Persia, from its intricate miniatures and textiles to its mesmerizing tiling and architecture. From a very young age, I knew that art and design were my true passions, and there was never a question of pursuing anything else. Being an artist isn’t just a career—it’s an inherent part of who you are. It’s not something you become; it’s something you’re born with. My artistic journey has always been about exploring, creating, and bringing beauty into the world in my own unique way.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was born in Dallas, Texas, and I am an American-Iranian (Persian) artist and designer, recognized for my work in minimalism, light and space, hard-edge painting, and geometric art.
My passion for art emerged at a very young age. I attended a graphic design high school in Tehran, where I mastered various design techniques while studying both Eastern and Western art history. I was then accepted into Tehran Fine Arts University—one of Iran’s most prestigious institutions—where I pursued my Bachelor’s in Graphic Design. Exploring contemporary art museums and galleries in Tehran, as well as traveling to Iran’s historic cities and witnessing their breathtaking architecture, profoundly shaped my artistic development.
After graduating in 2001, I moved back to the United States. In 2017, I enrolled at Claremont Graduate University in California to pursue my Master of Fine Arts. My time in graduate school was transformative, deepening my interest in the Light and Space and Minimalism movements. Through rigorous exploration and experimentation, my work evolved dramatically, reflecting a fusion of both Western and Eastern artistic influences. I participated in numerous exhibitions and received several prestigious fellowships, further solidifying my artistic path. Today, I live and work in Newport Beach, California.
What sets my work apart is my use of unconventional materials, often in ways that, as far as I know, have never been done before. One of my greatest personal achievements as an artist was the moment I truly discovered my creative voice after years of dedication and hard work in grad school. That breakthrough was a defining milestone in my journey.
Like many artists, I continue to navigate the challenge of gaining recognition in the art world. Balancing my career with motherhood means wearing many hats, constantly striving to maintain equilibrium between my family life and my artistic pursuits. At times, things move too slowly; at other times, there never seem to be enough hours in the day. But at the end of it all, I am doing what I love, and that is what matters most.
Above all, I want my work to make the world a better place. Through my reflective, interactive, and colorful creations, I strive to offer my audience a sense of joy, pleasure, and even ecstasy—inviting them into an experience that is both immersive and transformative.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, I would plan an unforgettable week filled with art, culture, great food, and beautiful coastal experiences.
Day 1: Art and Culture in Downtown LA
We’d start with a visit to some of my favorite museums—the Broad, MOCA, and LACMA—where we’d immerse ourselves in contemporary and modern art. Afterward, we’d explore Hauser & Wirth and Royale Projects, the latter being the gallery that represents my work in the heart of LA’s Arts District. To recharge, we’d stop by Bottega Louie for a coffee and their delicious beignets, or enjoy an amazing dinner at République on La Brea.
Day 2: Exploring Orange County
In OC, I’d take my friend to the Orange County Museum of Art and SCAPE Gallery in Corona Del Mar. For a cozy café experience, we’d grab coffee and pastries at Rendez Vous French Bakery & Café, a charming little spot that never disappoints.
Day 3-4: Coastal Adventure and Relaxation
No trip to Southern California is complete without a beach day! We’d visit Crystal Cove State Park for breathtaking coastal views and a relaxing hike. Then, we’d explore Laguna Beach’s art scene, stopping by galleries and Museum, catching the sunset at Top of the World. Dinner would be at Las Brisas, overlooking the ocean.
Day 5-6: More Art and Hidden Gems
We’d spend a day gallery-hopping in Culver City and West Hollywood, checking out contemporary art spaces and experimental exhibitions. Another must-visit would be the Getty Center, both for its art collection and its stunning views.
Day 7: Wine, Shopping, and a Sunset Farewell
To wrap up the week, we’d go wine tasting at Malibu Wines, followed by a little shopping at Melrose Place. We’d end the trip with a final sunset dinner at Geoffrey’s Malibu—the perfect way to say goodbye to an amazing week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support, mentorship, and encouragement of so many people. I owe a great deal of gratitude to the faculty at Claremont Graduate University, where I earned my Master of Fine Arts. Professors Rachel Lachowicz, David Amico, David Pagel, and Carmine Iannaccone played a pivotal role in my artistic growth, believing in my work when I was navigating challenges and pushing me to become the best artist I could be.

I am also incredibly grateful to Rick Royale and Nicolette Stewart at Royale Projects Gallery, who recognized my work and gave me the opportunity to showcase it soon after graduation. Their belief in my art has been instrumental in my journey, and I truly appreciate their continued support.

Additionally, I am thankful to Jeannie Denholm at SCAPE Gallery in Corona Del Mar, where I also exhibit my work. Having spaces that embrace and champion my artistic vision has been invaluable in shaping my career.
