We had the good fortune of connecting with Lana Platin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lana, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Connecting with people I started this business in Covid to spread love , joy and positivity during such a dark time in so many peoples lives.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My former career for over 25 years has been in the interior design space. Managing several multi line showrooms in the world famous Decoration and Design building in NYC. Working with high end luxurious textiles, furniiture,, carpet, wall coverings and so much more as well as the top interior designers gave me the desire to later on create things of my own. I went on to the other side of the business once I had children designing small residential projects. After we moved out of Manhattan for a life in the suburbs I went on to open a brick and mortar shop where I sold high end home accessories and utilized the back space as my office and library for my clients.
During Covid, like so many , I decided to “pivot” and try something new!
Ironically I am a mom of two teenage boys, i started having girls camps and classes in my back yard. Tie dye , jewelry making, paint and tape and so much more.
I then went on to teach myself hand embroidery through you tube. It wasn’t easy but I feel like I finally mastered it. Friends and family started giving me their clothes to embroider. i decided it was time to start an Instagram account. The entire intention behind it was to spark joy! To post happy things because everyone was locked up at home. Lonely, depressed and unable to get back to normal life as we knew it.
One foot in front of the other I would ship out little orders and the feed back was tremendous. “From the packaging to the actual product” you made my day! Thank u!
I will never forget this one client was going for invitro fertilization to get pregnant and she wore my “positive vibes” hoodie and it worked! That lifted me more than you will ever know. So it was little things like those messages from people all over the world actually that pushed me to keep going.
I think the biggest take away is that I want to create joy for people. I want to lift their spirits in a small way. I work with several charities a year and always try to give back. Life is hard and we all have our obstacles and challenges but If I can make someone happy and create joy for even just a moment, then I have achieved my goal!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes, my mother. Although she is no longer with us , I believe my creativity came from my mother. She ran a very big children’s wear company. For several years. She showed me that I can be anything I want! Her grit, hard work and determination through the years exemplified what it takes to be successful. Her ability to “PIVET” and grow with each obstacle running a business while staying creative and always on the cutting edge of style, was truly invaluable
