We had the good fortune of connecting with Lars Deutsch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lars, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
By the time I was fifteen / sixteen, I spent most of my time playing and writing music. I tried to soak up everything and it seemed logical to study music. I did not think of a career, it was all about getting better. Writing music and storytelling with music seemed like a natural fit.

After a BA / MA in Composition, I scored many student films, wrote with many indie artist and gradually cultivated a network of people that work on interesting projects.

I have a long list of credits now, but essentially it is still all about learning, meeting and working with interesting artists and directors. It sill feels like I am pursuing art more than an artistic career.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have scored over 400 films and commercials and I write / produce / mix for a number of artists. I am always looking for something I have not done – a new sound, a new style, etc … In the world of commercials and mnemonics, I recently wrote for A&T, Toyota, Oreo and Hyundai.

I also recently wrote and produced a retro sci-fi synth album of out of tune synths, that can be epic, cheesy, cute, warm and fun. The album is called “Boum Dans L’Espace”. I also mixed a Dolby Atmos version of the album.

Earlier this year, I scored a flying theater. This is a tourist attraction with amazing images that will open in Mexico City. And after lots of electronic music, I was happy to mix an actual band this year. Check out “Switch” by the Magic Wands. They charted in Europe and the college radio charts in the US.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like coffee. I am a regular at Amp Coffee (NoHo) and Commissary (Burbank) – but I would also take people to Kaleido Coffee, Maesto Coffee, Primo Passo, Steeple House Coffee and Bar Nine, to name a few.

I would take a guest from out of town to Genwa Korean BBQ, the Malibu Pier Cafe or Gus’ BBQ in Pasadena.

My life is all coffee, food, music and movies.
