We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
From the first time I picked up a brush and painted for the first time I knew art was something I could not live without. As an artist you sort of have no option but to start your own art business. There are no companies that can hire you to paint for them, so if you want to sale your art, you have to take a deep breath and go for it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an oil based artist. I use to want to define the type of art that I created and would call myself an abstract artist, which I guess I still am, but I have grown and evolved as an artist. My current art is inspired by travel. I love to travel and so I paint the best memories from my travels in hopes to captures the beauty of these special experiences weather its a pasta tablescape or French cafes table setting. I hope to bring those special memories to whomever buys my art.

I am most proud of an amazing commission I recently created for a restaurant opening up in El Monte soon called Suerte. It has been my biggest commissions and an amazing experience.

Getting to where I am today has definitely been very difficult. It has taking a lot of time, consistency, and hard work. Not to mention balancing a full time job as a Designer along the way., but there is no other way for me. Art is something I can not live without. In this process I have learned to give myself grace and have learned to not be so hard on myself. It’s ok to take breaks sometimes where I am not creating and it’s ok if no one is responding to my art and nothing is selling. Although as hard as that is and discouraging I have to keep reminding myself that I do this for me and not for anyone else. Consistency has been one of the most important things and the more you show up for you the more people will also show up for you.

I want the world to look at my art and feel happiness. I want my art to spark fun and beautiful memories from special vacations they have experienced. Moments they would want to hold on to forever.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Favorite places to go is definitely the beaches in Malibu. It feels so distant from the rest of LA. So relaxing and calm.

Love the surfrider as place to stay. The rooftop deck is it for me.

While keeping the Malibu theme Malibu Fresh Fish Market is so good and super inexpensive

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is for my husband Tramaine Brown. Without his encouragement and support I would never be able to make it as far as I have.
