We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura “chime” . González and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura “Chime”, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
My name is Laura Gonzalez, but I go by “Chime.” I’m originally from Armenia, Colombia, a small town known for its coffee production. I later moved to Bogotá, where I discovered my passion for the arts. In school, I participated in theater, played various instruments, and engaged in every artistic activity I could find. I’ve always been a very visual person who loves working with my hands, so I naturally gravitated toward becoming an artist.

Growing up, I was greatly influenced by my sister, Natt Gonzalez. She has always been an artist at heart—dabbling in music, and dance, and now working in the camera department as part of Local 600 IATSE. Following in her footsteps, I developed a love for films and photography. Some of my favorite memories are of the two of us going to the movies every Wednesday in Bogotá. Every time we watched a film, I became deeply curious about how it was made. Natt and I would go home afterward, research everything about the movie, watch behind-the-scenes footage, and dive into interviews with the cast and crew. We’d spend hours learning how sets were built and how the magic of filmmaking came together.

These moments fueled my passion for cinema and made me realize that I wanted to be part of something like that one day. My parents, though initially hoping my sister and I would follow in their footsteps in the military, have been incredibly supportive of our artistic ambitions. At 17, my family moved to Tampa, Florida, which was a bittersweet experience for me. I was sad to leave my friends and my country, but I saw it as an opportunity to chase my dreams in the film industry. From that moment, I worked hard to prepare for college in Los Angeles and ultimately began my journey as a filmmaker.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m incredibly proud of my journey in the film industry. While many people focus solely on the end goal, I’ve learned to truly appreciate and enjoy the process of getting there. Along the way, I’ve grown immensely—personally, artistically, and spiritually. I’ve found a sense of peace in my art and a deep fulfillment in what I do. Every effort, every tear, and every hour I’ve poured into my craft has been worth it.

Coming to the United States from Colombia at 17 years old, without knowing any English and armed with nothing but a dream, was one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced. Despite having no industry contacts or resources in Los Angeles, I was determined to pursue my passion. It hasn’t been an easy path, especially as an immigrant and a woman in a male-dominated industry, but my determination, resilience, and love for my craft have kept me moving forward.

In my art, I love working as a costumer on set, where I can use creativity to bring characters to life. I’ve also developed a passion for transforming and repurposing used clothing into stylish, new designs. Through my brand, “ChimeMotionStylist,” I focus on sustainable fashion, turning what we already have into something fresh and unique. I’ve recently started making my sketches and designs, which I’m excited to bring to life as custom pieces for sets and photoshoots. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see my artistic vision take shape in a way that’s both meaningful and stylish.

I’ve been fortunate to meet and work with talented and inspiring people on various sets. I also owe so much to the incredible teachers and mentors who have guided me and reminded me to stay true to my passions.

My support system has been my rock throughout this journey. I’m deeply grateful to my parents, Jair Gonzalez and Flor Rodriguez, for their unwavering love and encouragement, my sister Natt Gonzalez for being my constant inspiration, and my partner Kyle Nash and his family for their endless support. I’m also so thankful for my friends and many of the amazing people I’ve met on set, who have been so positive and encouraging throughout this journey—especially now that I’m working towards getting into Local 705 for motion picture costumers. Their belief in me has made all the difference, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

What I want the world to know is this: I’ve learned that success isn’t just about reaching the final destination—it’s about embracing every step of the journey. I’m living my dream life, even though I don’t have everything figured out, and I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to pursue my passion. As long as I stay true to myself and my craft, surround myself with people who guide me in the right direction, and continue to work hard and honestly, I know I’ll be just fine.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question because it reminds me of the amazing time I had recently when my cousins visited me from Colombia. It was their second time in Los Angeles, so I made sure to give them the ultimate tour of my favorite places and packed even more into their trip.

We started with the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Chinese Theater, and a hike to Griffith Observatory for breathtaking views. This time, I also introduced them to the culture of thrifting, and we spent a fun afternoon shopping for unique finds.

We explored Santa Monica and Malibu, soaking up the beach vibes and enjoying some of my favorite coffee shops and restaurants around town. Of course, no trip to LA is complete without street tacos, which I’m a huge fan of!

A highlight was a day trip to Big Bear, where we played in the snow, explored the cozy town, and enjoyed the festive holiday atmosphere.

I also showed them everything from Topanga Canyon and the Valley to the heart of LA and its surrounding areas, giving them a taste of the city’s diverse beauty. We revisited our shared love of film by going to a special movie screening and reminiscing about our childhood movie nights in Bogotá.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

I’d like to give a huge shoutout to my sister, Natt Gonzalez, for always being the best role model—not just as my sister but also in the film industry. She has inspired me in so many ways and continues to lead by example with her passion and dedication.

I also want to recognize Kyle Nash, an incredibly talented sound mixer, DJ, and gaffer. His passion, dedication, and commitment to everything he does are truly inspiring. He has always delivered as both a partner and an artist, and together, we’ve grown so much in this industry.

Lastly, a shoutout to Leigh Levi, a phenomenal makeup artist who is not only incredibly talented but also one of the kindest and most hard-working people I know. She’s become one of my closest friends in the industry, and I’m so grateful for her support and creativity.
