We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura May and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, how do you think about risk?
We have one life. One life to experience everything we can possibly experience, one life to go after what we want. Sitting around in our comfort zone gets us no where. I’d rather take a risk, fail and learn from my mistakes and have new found knowledge of how to play the game of life, as opposed to sitting around just stuck in a rut, in the same routine playing it safe.

Coming to L.A to pursue acting and film-making without knowing anyone in this industry was a big risk taking move for me. However, I’ve never been one to shy away from taking risks. As A teenager, I left my home city in Singapore and came to America to go to college because my dream as a little girl, was always to come to America to study and pursue my dreams. So moving to L.A was part of my risk taking adventure. I had to learn everything about the industry on my own, spend time building relationships and going through the ins and outs of the entertainment industry, that is also ever changing. Has it been an easy ride? No, but my resilience and the learning experiences have shaped who I am and also made me into the person I am proud of today. So I say to everyone out there, take risks, and if you make mistakes great, because your mistakes give you strength and knowledge, it promotes growth and is all a part of the journey, so embrace the risks and embrace the mistakes.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an actress, a film-maker, and recently started venturing into the voice-over world too. My high sense for empathy and understanding and ability to always stay grounded to who I am and be genuine is my superpower. I refuse to be something I’m not, I refuse to pretend to play this game of conforming. If it doesn’t feel authentic to me, I’m not going a long with it just to be accepted. Like minded people will find their way to each other and I trust that life will direct the right people to me and will direct me to the right people who share these sentiments with me.

This creative pursuit hasn’t been an easy one professionally, a lot of blood sweat tears have gone into this process. Somedays are harder than others but I have accepted the fact that for some of us it takes time and we all just have to keep at it. I can only trust my intuition to guide me and to continue to put in the work. And in the meantime, I just want learn grow and be grateful for the journey and experiences.

My brand? – Nurturing, Powerful, Empathetic, Loving and Genuine. I hope the stories I tell have a sense of these qualities, while also being able to entertain and make people laugh, cry and get excited. I hope it moves people.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Where would I take someone who was visiting – let’s see – there is so much to do.

First thing we would do if the weather is nice and cool, is go to a beach in Malibu – for example the beach by Sunset Restaurant in Malibu is a great spot to grab a bite and watch the sunset on the beach. It’s one of my favorite places to watch the sunset out here.

We’d also to the some of the museums like the broad, the la brea tar pits, etc. We could also visit The Getty.

For happy hour we would go to Five on the Hill! I love that spot and it’s so nice to hang out there, chill vibes, the menu changes frequently and their drinks are great. I’d take them to LA LO LA roof top at the AC hotel for Brunch in downtown L.A. Catch LA is another good brunch spot.

We would also do some shopping at the grove, century city and Americana. We could also check out some outlet malls. Maybe a day for Disney land too! And a studio tours at Warner bros or Universal.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my mother. When my dad passed away, my mother could have easily told me to pack my bags and come home to help her with things at home and also to help out with my brother who has epilepsy. She didn’t. She never wanted to take me away from my dreams and from where I wanted to be. My mother sacrificed a lot and she continues to remind me to keep going, to keep praying and it will happen.
My dream is to succeed and have enough resources so I can take care of mother and completely give my mother a life of freedom and comfort as she has had such a hard life. I just want her to experience relaxation, happiness and comfort for the rest of her life, for her to finally be able to just enjoy life without hardship.
