We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Zavala and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business definitely stemmed from becoming a mother at 19 years old. When I found out I was pregnant I was in college and I followed the traditional path of finishing school and entering the work force. I started my first full time job when my daughter was 2 1/2 and had to put her in preschool full time and it was extremely difficult. I longed for a job where I could be present for my daughter while still earning an income. I had always loved makeup and had dabbled in freelancing, but I decided to really pursue it in 2015 and Laura Zavala Makeup was born!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a bridal makeup artist servicing Ventura/Santa Barbara counties and surrounding areas. I think what sets me apart from others is my true love and passion for makeup artistry and making it an experience beyond getting makeup applied for my clients. I believe in human connection and I make an effort to make each and every client of mine feel special. I love being in the bridal industry because I truly get to know my clients- I am typically planning the beauty aspect of their wedding with them anywhere from 12-18 months before their day and these connections with my brides often turn into beautiful friendships.

I got to where I am today in my business by putting the client experience and human connection first! It has definitely not been easy, there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that is very difficult and non-glamorous. When you are self-employed you and you alone are everything. I don’t always feel my best or feel confident in myself, but to overcome these challenges I lean into my support system and my love for what I do.

I have learned that I may not be for everyone, and that is ok. I put out into the world what I want back from it and I truly believe that has blessed my business.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to my children, my husband, my mother, and my sister! My children are my why behind my business! My husband was my biggest supporter when I was debating whether or not to pursue my business full time, he encouraged me and reassured me when I was sure I was failing and could not do it. He is super dad with our kids on the weekend whenever I’m working. I could not be successful without his love and support. I also need to thank my mom and sister for being extremely supportive when I told them I was pursuing my artistry business full time- my mom will babysit for me whenever I need her to and I am extremely grateful. It takes a village of support when you run a business!
