Meet Lauren DeMoss | Cosmetologist , studio owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren DeMoss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
In my opinion work life balance is one of the most difficult but important things you can figure out when owning a small business. I believe this because if you do not take time for yourself over time you will get burnt out, and that burn out will show in your work. Your results, your attitude, your health everything will reflect you not taking time to rest.
In the beginning of my career, I had absolutely no balance at all. I was all work all the time, which i think contributed to my success so far. However, at some point you do have to take time for yourself. If I am being completely honest it’s still something I struggle with, I am a people pleaser to my core, so saying no or taking time off has been difficult for me in my career so far. I do feel I’ve gotten slightly better, as I’ve grown in the industry, having a full consistent clientele has helped with this and ive learned setting boundaries is a huge part of having a good work life balance.

What should our readers know about your business?
what sets me apart from other?
I believe there’s a few things that set me apart from others, first my passion. This is not just a job for me, I genuinely LOVE what i do. and I truly believe when you love what you do it shows in the results of your work. Second, I believe in education at all levels of your career, you can never have to much knowledge so i try to take as many classes as i can. Last, I make sure my clients know that they matter to me. I make sure to remember things about them, personal facts that they tell me. Because for me yes this is a job but i wouldn’t be where i am if people didn’t continue to sit in my chair and support me, the least i can do is know them, truly remember the things they tell me, and care.
What am i most proud of?
I am proud of how far I’ve come, there has been a lot of obstacles (similar to so many people) in my career starting with covid happening 6 months after getting licensed. So i am thankful and proud that i can honestly say at this point no matter what has been thrown at me I have over come it and come out on top because i worked my butt off. I am excited to see what the future holds for me and my small business
How did i get where i am today business wise? was it easy?
I believe I’ve gotten here from first never giving up and second working hard. Its sooo easy to give up when it gets hard but i told my self when i was in school that if i wanted to do this it wasn’t going to be easy but i have to give my 110% no matter what. So if in the end it doesn’t work out i know i tried everything in my power to make sure it worked out. Nothing is easy, life is hard. I’ve been able to over come things because I was raised everything is about your perspective on the situation, so although it hasn’t been easy I know i wouldn’t be who i am, or where i am, without the struggles.
What are lessons you’ve learned along the way?
Oh boy I’ve learned a lot! First, everybody is not for you, and you are not for everybody. Meaning not every person who sits in my chair is going to be a fit for me, and that’s okay. it doesn’t mean I’m terrible at hair or they are a terrible person, we just weren’t meant to be for whatever reason. Second, the industry is SMALL everyone knows someone who knows the same person as you, be kind and don’t burn bridges. Last, there is no such thing as to much education. Stay up to date, keep learning. Put your pride aside and listen to new things!
What do you want the world to know about you, your brand and story?
I guess i would want people to know how thankful i am, I have worked so hard to get here, but its not lost on me that without the continued support of my clients, friends and family, i wouldn’t be here.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take my bestie to the beach! Eat somewhere over looking the water, while drinking mimosas! if the LA county fair is in town, i would make sure we go there, for a concert, and to walk around, ride rides, eat junk food and share a bunch of laughs!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am thankful to say I have had a ton of support from my entire family, my partner and his family, and my friends in the industry
