Meet Lauren Nieves | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Nieves and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I love this question, because I think about it often, why did I choose to pursue a creative career? I think the answer to this is ever-changing, the more I work in this field, the more I wonder what pushes me forward. Most days the answer is simple; it’s my passion. I took a darkroom class my sophomore year of high school, and that’s where it all started. I knew that making photography a career was a possibility, but I didn’t know where to start. College really opened my eyes and made it possible for me to see a future as an artist. I knew that pursuing my passion as a career would be difficult and overwhelming at first, working 24/7 to make it by. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else with my life. Above all, I am the most fulfilled when I am on set, working and collaborating with other creatives. My favorite part about being a photographer is getting to know my clients and bringing their visions to life.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
As an artist, it is important for me to be authentically myself, creating work that showcases who I am. Working with other creatives has given me the opportunity to help them figure out what their brand is. I typically shoot film and find that it helps me focus on each individual photo. I spend more time setting up my shots, with intention. Lighting and location are everything to me. I think what sets me apart is my ability to think on my feet, to use what I have around me to create dynamic images.
I am proud of the progress that I have made since starting my journey roughly 8 years ago (professionally about 3 years). I just went full-time freelance, which was somewhat of a difficult decision. I had to accept that this path comes with little stability and that I would have to hustle in order to make it. I learned that making connections and learning from others is insanely important. In the last few years I have found mentors to guide me through this journey. Their advice, expertise, and years of experience inspires me.
I want the world to see the passion in every photo I take. To take a moment to study the subject, lighting, and composition. I know that not everyone will like the work I produce and share with the world, but my hope is that they can appreciate the process – and the stories that I am telling.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love that there are so many things to do and see in Los Angeles. When I moved from the Midwest to the West Coast I was stoked to have both the ocean and mountains. The first thing I would do is take my friend out to brunch, the hardest part is choosing a spot to go. I enjoy The Front Yard in studio city, it has the cutest patio full of greenery and delicious options. LA has an abundance of great hiking trails, but one can never go wrong with a hike in Malibu. Point Mugu is my all time favorite trail, right next to a great secluded beach. You can never go wrong with beach days, I would plan a day trip to Zuma beach, El Matador, and Point Dume. Of course we would have to hit up a few flea markets; Los Feliz Flea Market, The Melrose Trading Post, and Silverlake Flea Market. The food and drink options are endless, but a nice dinner at Bavel and drinks + games at EightyTwo is the perfect night out.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My first mentor Elise Swopes (@swopes) has been such a light in my life. Since the moment we connected, she has supported me and my work. I have looked up to her for years and being able to call her a mentor is an immense honor. Her positivity and love for art pushes others to pursue creative careers.
