We had the good fortune of connecting with Laurentia Editha and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laurentia, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I made the very big decision to come to the US from Indonesia to pursue a career in film music. It was an offbeat career choice where I’m from, and was definitely a huge leap fueled by passion and a lot of admiration and desire to pursue the craft, and I’m lucky enough to still be doing it now.

What I knew from the start (and that is still true now), was that I truly love working to picture. I loved the collaborative process between the composer and the filmmaker. I loved drawing emotional arcs and helping shape stories, and to then send it off to the world and have it be this whole experience, it’s just such a rewarding feeling.

Along my career, I’ve been fortunate enough to work on many cool projects, including Apple TV’s HOME: Bali that earned an FYC Emmys consideration, Netflix’s 4-part documentary series “Alien Worlds”, and an upcoming 6-part nature documentary series titled “Growing Up Animal” with Nat Geo. I’ve attributed my main driving force to my passion in helping the filmmakers deliver an story out to the world, no matter the format. It’s important to never forget how to connect to the subject matter, and to continue to play a role in the story-telling process of the work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It was definitely anything but easy. I enrolled in Berklee College of Music in 2013, graduated in 2017 and moved to LA immediately. Started off doing internships and have had the privilege to assist many composers such as Amie Doherty, Scott Salinas, Arturo Rodriguez, Federico Jusid, and many more.

I got hired by Bleeding Fingers Music in 2018, and have been writing for them since. It’s been rewarding to see how my outlook changed drastically in these 3 years, and I’ve realized it’s important to be adaptable, and to have an adaptable workflow. My biggest revelation was that there are so many facets of growth within being a film
composer that comes with experience: be it from the musical, production, workflow, and relational aspects of the job. There’s always something we can grow in, and it makes it for a fulfilling career with a never ending learning experience.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely Downtown LA. I find that area to be the most gritty and fun. It think it presents the many faces of LA well – the good and the bad – and is definitely worth a glance!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to thank my parents! They’ve taken such a huge risk, and have made many sacrifices to send me to the US to pursue this career. So, huge shout-out mom and dad!
