Meet Laurie Lipton | The 21st Century’s greatest draughtswoman… but humble with it

We had the good fortune of connecting with Laurie Lipton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laurie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I didn’t pursue it. It pursued me

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I began drawing detailed images at the age of four and, 65 years later, am still going strong. I’ve lived in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, London and am currently residing in Los Angeles. My work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the United States. An art critic once wrote something that sums up my work beautifully: “Method and subject converge in Laurie Lipton’s large-scale and exacting pencil drawings. With imagery as dense and multiple as her line work, Lipton draws with the precision of a brain surgeon. The results are stunning, worrying, funny and, above all, powerful.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My work is large, detailed and intense… so I don’t get out much. Anyone visiting me would probably have already prepared their own itinerary and would be willing to forcibly remove me from my drawing table (but I do love The Getty Museum, and LACMA, and The Hammer!)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents encouraged and supported me throughout my life, so a shoutout to Roy and Barbara Lipton (wherever their souls may be)
