Meet Leland Montgomery | Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Leland Montgomery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leland, what principle do you value most?
In my twenties, my passion for filmmaking consumed my priorities, often overshadowing essential aspects of life, such as family connections. The relentless pursuit of goals and ambitions led me to deprioritize personal relationships and vital moments for a balanced and fulfilling life. However, a profound realization has dawned upon me as I’ve moved into my thirties. I’ve understood that my core values extend beyond the lens and film sets. The essence of my existence lies in being present and forging genuine connections with those around me. Now, as I embark on a more holistic journey, I find fulfillment in the art of filmmaking and the richness of the relationships and experiences that truly define the tapestry of a meaningful life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a filmmaker, I get most excited when I can delve into narratives with characters I genuinely understand. It’s a fascinating paradox in my creative journey—I’ve encountered scripts where establishing a connection with the characters is easy, as if they were old friends. However, the real challenge surfaces when faced with scripts where this connection seems elusive, akin to a puzzle I can’t entirely solve. This dilemma becomes even more pronounced when I’m deeply immersed in a script, grappling to unveil the layers of a character who remains elusive. Yet, it is in overcoming this challenge that the true magic of the process emerges.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If one of my best friends was visiting Los Angeles, we’d start the morning with breakfast at All Time – they have pretty incredible breakfast sandwiches. Then we’d grab coffee from Maru (if we were brave enough to manage the lines) and then stroll down Los Feliz Boulevard. I’m not gonna pitch a “hiking in Griffith” moment because, despite living in Los Angeles, I hate hiking… but a little promenade past all the lovely old houses is excellent for a Saturday morning. Next, since they were visiting, I’d pitch going to the Academy Museum, followed by lunch at Yuko’s Kitchen. After that, we’d return home and get ready for the evening. Maybe a West Hollywood situation (Gracias Madre, perhaps?) Or maybe something more low-key like Akbar or the Eagle. The next day we’d do brunch at Mirate, go to the Melrose Flea, and maybe cap it off with a movie at American Cinematheque.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to Christopher Matias Aguila, who is a constant collaborator and source of inspiration to me.
