We had the good fortune of connecting with Lena Strothe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lena, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I never set out to be a business owner. I went to liberal arts school so the idea of starting a business seemed quite foreign, and something for suits. But I do like creating things and the idea of community building, and so when the idea of Wrangle came about, I felt it was the right project for me to really pursue. Sure, there are some dry aspects of starting a business, but the prospect of building something from nothing was very exciting.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Wrangle is a members-only hiring and networking site for media professionals. It helps vetted freelancers to find new and exciting creative projects, and enables agencies, studios, labels, brands, etc. to connect with top-tier talent. The toughest part in building our network? Though the site is free to use, we are asking people to give us their time and trust, never a small ask! Over time though, we’ve been able to build a reputation with both clients and freelancers alike. We are built almost exclusively on referrals, which has made our community extremely tight-knit even as we expand globally.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Huntington Gardens is hands-down my favorite outdoor experience. Every time I stroll through the lush rose garden or walk by the Japanese pagodas , I feel truly bowled over by the beauty of the place.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My business partner Phil Brown made Wrangle a reality. I brought the idea to him one evening at a bar, a little bashful about pitching something to a Silicon Valley software engineer. Surely, he must hear this all the time. But not only did he believe in our platform, he built the technology to support it singlehandedly and with more skill and passion than I ever could have hoped for.
