Meet Lester Gonzalez | Freelance Dancer & Instructor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lester Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lester, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m originally from Havana, Cuba. Growing up in a third-world country deeply shaped the person I am today. It taught me to value simple things in life, like family, friendships, and every opportunity that comes my way. My upbringing instilled in me a strong work ethic, a genuine sense of gratitude and desire to help others. I consider myself a very adaptable, easygoing, and kind person.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a ballet-trained dancer and performing artist with over 12 years of professional experience. Recently, I transitioned into freelancing to broaden my career opportunities; a move that has already proven to be incredibly rewarding. I’m also the co-founder of Pas De Deux Workshops & Coaching, a small business my twin brother and I created to offer pas de deux classes and workshops for dedicated ballet students, ranging from pre-professional to adult levels. I credit much of the success I have to my determination and adaptability. Back in Cuba, I faced many challenges and limitations that made it difficult to thrive. Because of that, I am driven to seize every opportunity available to me. Since emigrating to the United States 11 years ago, I’m proud of how far I’ve come professionally. Taking ownership of my craft has been one of the most empowering decisions I’ve made. I’m excited to continue sharing my passion for dance while also exploring new paths for growth. I’ve learned that opportunities don’t always come your way, so being proactive is key to getting where you want to be.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I currently live in San Diego, CA, so if my best friend was visiting for a week, I’d take them to the San Diego Zoo, La Jolla Cove, Balboa Park, and Old Town San Diego. There are also some great restaurants in Little Italy that are perfect for dining out. Lastly, I’d take them to Tango del Rey for social dancing or to Café Sevilla for live flamenco music.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Aside from my family, I’ve been fortunate to have many people who have helped and encouraged me throughout the years. Their endless support has allowed me to navigate obstacles and to pursue my goals in life.
