We had the good fortune of connecting with Lexi Weege and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lexi, what are you inspired by?
As a touring musician, I am constantly in awe of our country’s natural beauty and the people I meet.
These last few years especially, I’ve been greatly inspired by the desert and always come home with new songs and poems.
I’ve been on the road for over ten years now and I’ve met so many incredible people who’ve shared the their stories and opened their homes to me. The kindness of strangers turned friends has always filled my spirit and given me the strength to keep going, no matter how uncertain the path ahead may be!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I got my start in a musical family; my mother produced a traveling broadway review. I got my taste young and started singing in the review at age 8.
We didn’t have much growing up, but my life was covered in sequins and filled with music.
I played in bands, wrote music and taught myself the piano.
Once I turned 18, I began traveling and performing my songs on an 88 key electric Yamaha keyboard I’d hoist over my shoulder and schlep around. I joined a big band in Cleveland and sang jazz for a summer, came home for a spell, joined a rock and roll band, put out a few records and just kept performing.
At this point in my life, I’ve performed in 35 states, released five records and recently started a new band with JJ Slater, called Signature Dish, a double drum cosmic blues outfit. We released a single, “Bonfire At Helen’ (Text Me For The Address)” this week and it’s streaming everywhere now!
I’ve devoted my life to making music and sharing it with others. My voice has allowed me to experience life in such a unique way and I look forward to what this next chapter brings!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My songwriting and life partner, JJ Slater.
We’ve been touring the country together, living out of our 2009 Toyota Sienna for the last three years, performing anywhere and everywhere we can together; sharing our music in mining towns, dive bars, record shops, beer halls… you name it, we’ve played it,
Our creative relationship has been a truly fulfilling one and I feel like we are two vines growing up the same trellis.
