We had the good fortune of connecting with L’FREAQ and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi L’FREAQ, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
Ultimately I’d love for people to remember me as a creatively unpredictable force. I want my legacy to be one of tolerance, acceptance, and love.
The concept behind L’FREAQ started as a rallying cry to those who felt bullied and shunned. I wanted the word FREAQ to be reclaimed and subverted, transformed into a suit of armor that anyone could wear to empower themselves. My mission on this earth is to help raise the energy of our collective, to help people remember they have so much more strength than they believe they do. If I can touch one person and make them feel more empowered and authentic, I’m doing my job.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m proud of the television synchs I have including Playboy, Riverdale, and Netflix’s Dating Around. I’m proud of the new music that I am creating. But most of all I am proud of conceptualizing the L’FREAQ universe as a whole. Seeing people say the name or wear my merch makes me happy because it was born from the kernel of an idea. In this life seeing something you’ve made come to life is the most magical process. And I am excited to do this again and again with other projects I am working on.
In regards to if this has been easy, none of this has been easy for me and sometimes it is the most frustrating feeling to find yourself up against a wall with money, time, or support. But I keep reminding myself daily that it is the thing that lights me up. It’s the thing that helps me wake up in the morning. And at the end of the day that’s all I can ask for.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend was visiting me I would definitely take them to Mi Corazon for the best nachos and margaritas, then Speranza right across the street for my favorite pasta bolognese and red wine. Can you tell I’m a foodie? I love taking people to Grand Central Market in DTLA to do a taster of all their different foods, of course stopping at Karl Strauss brewery along the way. I’d also take them to The Last Bookstore (one of my favorite gems in LA) and then to Hollywood Forever Cemetery for a movie night.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout at the moment goes to my manager Ryan Vaughn, who is always patient with my crazy ideas and empowers me to be my best. My other shoutout goes to my publishing company, Position Music, who has helped me develop the ideas for my new EP and give it the attention it deserves.
