We had the good fortune of connecting with Lika(Yuyun) Su and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lika(Yuyun), what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
For me, the process of creating works is an important way to explore and understand myself. In this process, I continuously discover my inner world, revealing the emotions and thoughts that lie deep within. This process is ongoing, with no definite end, because self-awareness and growth are endless.
On a mental level, I greatly enjoy this creative process. Whenever I immerse myself in creation, the flow of thoughts and inspiration makes me feel fulfilled and joyful. At the same time, it is a way for me to relax and unwind. During creation, I can temporarily escape the pressures and troubles of reality, entering a world that belongs purely to myself.
Choosing artistic creation as my means of self-expression is a natural choice for me. Through art, I can convey complex emotions and profound thoughts that are difficult to describe with words. Art has become a special medium for me to communicate with the world, allowing me to share my inner world and unique perspectives.
Therefore, becoming an artist is not just a career choice but a way of life. Giving up artistic creation is almost impossible for me. It has become a part of my existence.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe that each person’s artistic process and sources of inspiration are unique. The journey to becoming an artist is filled with setbacks and self-doubt. For me, the passion and enthusiasm for the creative process are the main reasons I persevere. Additionally, the mutual support and collective progress within the artistic community are crucial.
Throughout my artistic career, I have faced periods of self-doubt. I have never been adept at expressing my feelings verbally or describing abstract emotions in concrete terms, which can seem like a barrier for an artist. However, I have discovered that art is remarkably inclusive—when I pour enough love and dedication into it, audiences can feel and respond to my work.
The encouragement and resonance from my audience have greatly inspired and motivated me. This is another reason why I love art—it transcends linguistic boundaries and speaks directly to people’s hearts. This mode of communication has not only helped me find a path for self-expression but has also taught me that sincere creation can deeply move others.
An important lesson I’ve learned is to bravely confront challenges and failures. Each setback has been an opportunity for learning and growth. Furthermore, maintaining passion and enthusiasm for art is crucial. It is this passion that has enabled me to persist through difficulties and continually strive for improvement.
I hope that my art is not just a visual representation but also a means of emotional and intellectual exchange. Through my work, I aim to evoke emotions and provoke thoughts that are difficult to articulate. I believe that art possesses the power to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers, fostering profound connections between people.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is an interesting question because I currently live in Baltimore. If a friend were visiting, I would probably take her to the National Aquarium in Baltimore. It’s a wonderful place with a rich variety of marine life and definitely worth a visit. After that, we could go to the Inner Harbor to watch the seagulls and enjoy the sea breeze and beautiful scenery.
If she’s interested in exhibitions, I could also take her to visit some of Baltimore’s museums, such as the Baltimore Museum of Art or The Walters Art Museum, both of which have fantastic art collections and exhibitions.
Life in Baltimore is generally slow-paced, which is one of the reasons I enjoy living here. Our daily itinerary would likely depend on my friend’s food preferences and the activities she wants to do. Baltimore has a lot of great restaurants, offering everything from seafood and Italian cuisine to authentic Southern American flavors, so there’s something to satisfy every taste.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am grateful to every person who has appeared in my life. I believe that it is their presence and the memories and experiences they have given me, that have shaped who I am today. Each interaction, whether big or small, has contributed to my growth and my journey as an artist.
Of course, the ones I need to thank the most are my family. They have given me endless love and tolerance, and they support me in becoming an artist. Their unwavering support has given me the courage to make my choices and the opportunity to receive an arts education. My family’s belief in my potential and their encouragement through challenging times have been invaluable.
I believe that all experiences, people, and feelings are worth being grateful for. Every encounter and every challenge has played a role in shaping my artistic path. I owe my journey not only to my own efforts but also to the collective support and influence of everyone around me.
