Meet Lindy Hudis | Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindy Hudis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindy, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in Miami, but my family moved to a small town in Tennessee when I was very young. Germantown, Tennessee to be exact. I was exposed to many cruel and heartbreaking experiences while growing up in the deep south. I always had my eye on California through. Even as a small child I would watch Hollywood movies late at night and tell myself that I was going to escape Tennessee and have the California life I have always dreamed of. I did! It was a huge leap of faith to jump on the westbound airplane, but to me it was just like jumping into a cool swimming pool – you hold your nose and jump! I had no other choice.
My background was difficult and abusive. Not only was my family dysfunctional but we encountered some very horrible people. Let me put this this way – “southern hospitality” doesn’t exist! For a long time, as a wounded child, I felt that things that were said and done to me were my fault. The very strict, religious and conservative environment was very hurtful to me and it was a painful world to grow up in. As a small child, you don’t understand why your friend’s parents ignore you. It was because my father was Jewish and my mother Baptist. I didn’t know that would spark so much hate, but it did.
As an author and aspiring screenwriter, I have put all of my childhood adversity into my writing. When I first moved to Los Angeles, I was a struggling actress. It was an exciting time to be in LA, because it was the early 90’s and there were so many things going on. I did some theater, small bit parts and some commercials and music videos. That time in Hollywood helped me grow and learn about myself and life in general. Movies are magical, they are really the only artistic medium that can really transport you to another place and time. Books as well, but there is something special about movies. That is why I have never given up on my screenwriting dream!
The artistic community of Los Angeles is a huge one, with many diverse backgrounds and people. I was inspired to write because of the many interesting artists I met along the way. There is absolutely no other city in the world like it. It is a fascinating combination of intimidating, creative, fun and simply an amazing place to call home.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well, before I came our to LA, I made a stop in NYC for a few years. I attended New York University Tisch School of the Arts to study my craft. I also performed in a number of Off-Off Broadway theater productions while living in New York City.
After graduating, I headed west to work in the entertainment industry. Was it easy? No, but you have to keep on. One thing I do believe in is perseverance.
To overcome challenges, one must have a very strong support group. I have that in my family.. My daughter, who is autistic, wants to go to film school. I told her she can do anything she wants to. You have to have a rock solid conviction that it can be done.
I have also ventured into film-making. My short film “The Lesson”, which I wrote, produced and directed along with my husband Stephen, has won numerous awards, including ‘Best Short Film’ at the Paris International Film Festival, The Beverly Hills Arthouse Film Festival and the San Fransisco International Film Festival.
Right now my focus is on my writing. I am the author of several titles, including a romance suspense novel, Weekends, a“Hollywood” story City of Toys, and a crime novel, Crashers. My latest release, “Hollywood Underworld – A Hollywood Series” is the first installment of a crime, mystery series. All inspired from my life in the amazing City of Angels.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow! I have actually done this before!
First, we would spend the day in Santa Monica, at the pier and the beach. There are so many great places to eat and shop on the Third Street Promenade. We would ride the rides (except for the Shark Frenzy – barf!), eat at Bubba Gump’s and then take a walk along the beach or Ocean Avenue. That neighborhood is my “old stomping ground” so I know it well.
The “touristy” things are actually lots of fun. So many historic “Old Hollywood” things to see and do. Of course, the venerable Disneyland and Magic Mountain are always on the list. I also lived in Hollywood, so I know to take friends to see Mann’s Chinese Theater and Hollywood Walk of Fame.
When I have friends visit, I always take them to Gladstones 4 Fish! It’s so Malibu! I took my mom to Yamashiro and she loved it. I love to take a “car tour” of all my favorite filming location spots. I took my kids to see the Nightmare on Elm Street house in Hollywood. People seem to be fascinated with that, well, except my kids.
Another fun place is El Matador Beach, hard to get to (all those stairs) but a gorgeous place and an interesting filming locations, too! There are so many amazing things to check out that it would definitely take longer than a week!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my late father-in-law, the great Norman Hudis. He encouraged me to continue writing and he was my inspiration. Norman was a screenwriter in England, but then came to California to write for television. He had so many great stories. I miss him terribly.
My husband Stephen Hudis is also my rock, cheerleader, partner in crime and inspiration!
