We had the good fortune of connecting with Lino Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lino, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Los Angeles, and grew up in a neighborhood called Koreatown. I come from a Mexican family, and my parents spent their whole lives working excessively. My parents were great savers and they were able to put me through college, but there was definitely a lack of financial literacy. Moreover, most communities of lower socioeconomic status don’t have access to these types of resources or anyone teaching our communities how to save and invest.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
First of all, my approach as an advisor is always taking an educational approach. If the person has assets already, or plans that are already in-force, I always make sure to educate the person or family on how their current plans work. What sets me apart is that this is completely complimentary. I want to make sure they understand the language that I’m speaking, because some of these financial terms and concepts are extremely foreign to the average person. Sometimes, what they have in place makes perfect sense for their situation and there’s nothing to implement. Other time’s, someone might have blind spots that they don’t take into account within their portfolio where I might provide some perspective. The hardest part is understanding that there is no one solution for everyone. Every person has their own unique situation, with their own set of values and goals. As an advisor, those things need to be taken into consideration when making a recommendation. I provide equitable services in the areas of retirement planning, college planning, asset protection, and insurance-based solutions.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I grew up in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles, and I have seen it change drastically. I would take someone to all the different restaurants found within my neighborhood and take them through a roller coaster of cultural gastronomy. Furthermore, we have great views in Los Angeles, and I think a hike does everyone well! Los Angeles is very diverse, and we’re blessed to have fine dining restaurants like Bestia or Bavel, and at the same equally delicious street tacos.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank the Oaxacan community in Los Angeles for fostering and maintaining our cultures and customs. Part of the reason why I became an advisor was because there was a lack of financial literacy within my community. My community has organized fundraisers to help one another by vending traditional foods from our hometown. Those funds are then used multiple purposes, such as paying for a someone’s funeral or sending the body back to Oaxaca. This motivated me to learn about the industry so that I may one day become a resource to my community. In addition, a great portion of my community has an entrepreneurial spirit. Many sell custom clothing, custom foods, yet they might not be aware of the basics of setting up a business correctly.
