Meet Liv Nicholson | Pop/Rock Artist and Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Liv Nicholson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liv, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been a songwriter, ever since 3rd grade, and I always loved the feeling of writing a song that I needed to hear. In high school, I would be going through a hard time and not be able to find the right song to help me through it, so I would write it instead. I realized if I could do that for myself, I could certainly be helping others too. Music is very powerful and healing in many ways. I wanted to pursue being a writer and an artist as a career, so I could write songs that people needed to hear, for the rest of my life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So I’m a pop singer and songwriter. I moved to Nashville from New York when I was 18 to go to Belmont University where I majored in songwriting and music business. My experience has been similar to a lot of young professionals who graduated within 6 months of the pandemic hitting, which is best described by one word. Weird. I graduated in December of 2019, which was about 3 months before everything happened. I started 2020 feeling ready to hit the ground running with my creative career, I blinked, and covid shut down the world including music venues, networking events, and in person writing sessions. I spent most of that year writing over zoom and trying to stay as creative as possible, but there was also a lot of baking and binge watching tv!
Now we’re obviously all still recovering from the effects of covid, but luckily music seems to be back in full swing, and has been for some time now. What I’m currently most excited about is the music I’m releasing and playing more live shows! In 2021 I released my debut EP, “Talk It Out,” all while writing for my next project which is what I’m working on now! I had a single come out in March called “Deserved It,” and have my newest single, “Sappy,” just dropped on all music streaming platforms Friday, May 13th. I’m really proud of these new songs, because they’re very authentic to my story, and I’m having so much fun finding the sound that I think best fits my music. I’m also EXTREMELY excited about all of the visual content that’s going along with the new project! Shoutout Matt Blum, my amazing photographer!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So I’m actually based in Nashville! There are so many places I bring people when they come to visit! Broadway is a must if you’ve never experienced it, but for a lot of people who live down here, once is enough haha. We’d have to hit up some rooftop bars as well. I love the food scene in Nashville. I think there are so many unique, atmospheric restaurants. Some of my favorite places to eat are probably Sinema, Burger Up, Kayne Prime Steakhouse and Mas Tacos, just to name a few. I also love places like Von Elrod’s, Up-Down, or any of the breweries, for a day of drinking and outdoor games like corn hole or hook and ring toss! Of course music is an absolute must in Nashville. There is something going on every single night, at every single venue. The Ryman is by far my favorite venue in the city. Everyone should see a show there, at least once in their life! I also love exploring all the sub-sections of the city such as, Sylvan Park/Nations, Lockland Springs, 12th South/Hillsboro and Germantown!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oof this is hard, because every little thing that’s ever happened to me, and every single person who’s come in and out of my life, has brought me to where I am today. So I’ll just name some of the most important. To start, I come from a family of performers. My parents met in college for theatre, my Dad is an actor, my Mom is a former talent agent, and my sister is an opera singer. So to use the word “support” would be an understatement. My parents always encouraged me to follow my dreams. They bought me guitars, drove me to voice lessons, helped me record my college admission songs, and so much more. When I was younger I did a lot of musical theatre, and when I would meet new people, my Dad would introduce me as his daughter the songwriter. I would get mad and tell him to call me “an actress,” which he never did haha. But I think that actually played a big role in how I got to where I am today. I thought writing songs was just my version of writing in a diary, but my parents encouraged me to dream outside of my little songbook. I’ll never be able to express my gratitude for the life they gave me.
Other than family, I guess I have to thank every guy I ever dated in Middle School and High School, who broke my heart. Those were really the formative years of my writing and I guess you could say those boys kept the inspiration coming. Haha.
