We had the good fortune of connecting with Liz Morrow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liz, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I think there’s a vast underestimation of the amount of work it takes to be an influencer in any industry, but specifically in the DIY home renovation realm. I know some folks have teams or assistants, or hire out some of the work, but for most of the people I know–including myself– we wear about 100 different hats on any given day. We’re photographers, videographers, our own agents in dealing with brands and setting up collaborations and campaigns, we administrative assistants, editors, social media marketers, graphic designers, spend hours on community engagement, if we have products or an online shop, we’re managing that– shipping, bookkeeping, etc. There’s this idea that influencers get sent tons of free stuff and get paid tons of money to “just take a photo and post it” but in reality the behind the scenes work involved is really what entire teams are doing for corporate brands and we’re doing it all ourselves. I love the creative freedom it allows me, to be in charge of and involved in the entire creative process. It might seem like a lot, but it lets me have a lot of control over what my platform promotes, how I engage with my community, and how I spend my time, all of which are incredibly important to me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I remember going to college and declaring my art major right away, hearing over and over that people change their majors multiple times, but I never did. Some of my earliest memories are of creating artwork. Over the decades I’ve been more of Jack of all Trades– I majored in digital art and printmaking in college, became a graphic designer after graduation, then did photography professionally as a wedding photographer, then I shifted into interior design years later. Now, as a DIY Home Renovation content creator I use skills and elements from pretty much every single creative career I’ve ever had. I’m doing graphic design to create merch designs and web design for my site, I use photography for my social media, I’m constantly using interior design skills, and I get to wield a paintbrush for the murals I paint. I love that I get to use the depth and breadth of my creativity every day.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d probably just eat and drink our way through town. I love en Rama for incredible cocktails, we’d get coffee and pastries from Bluebeard every morning, and hit up Bar Rosa or State Street Beer Co for drinks and amazing pizza.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents are a huge part of my story. They always made me feel like I was capable of anything, and let me be wildly creative, even if it meant painting hot rod flames on my bedroom walls. I think it’s incredibly important to foster creativity and independence in a kid, letting them try and fail, and my parents did so much of that. I saw them trying new things and stretching outside of their comfort zones, and I think that gave me a much higher threshold for just trying things out and not being afraid of failing.
