We had the good fortune of connecting with Loni Burkow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Loni, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by the arts. With a musical theatre background and a love for singing, I always loved to create and play pretend. As a hair stylist you have to envision yourself on stage, ready to perform. You get to write the story and create beauty with your audience. I am inspired every day by the wonderful staff I work with and beautiful Los Angeles. I continue to find beauty in everyone who sits in my chair. I hope to inspire them to see it in themselves.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing up in Michigan I was very fortunate to be in a family who appreciated art. Whether it was painting, singing, acting my family was a huge support and encouraged me creatively. I struggled with confidence and anxiety that crippled my dream for pursuing theatre. I knew I was supposed to do something creative and I found hairdressing just as fun and thrilling as being on stage. I love connecting with people and I get to make them feel good. In return I felt amazing and I enjoyed seeing my work walk out the door. I get to work with very talented people and travel the world. I receive amazing opportunities working with high end brands like Kerastase. I am constantly learning and building my business. I love what I do. It has opened up so many doors for me and led me to my home in Los Angeles. I continue to explore all that the beauty industry has to offer. I am also a color educator at luxelab. I found teaching so rewarding and challenging. It’s another tool in my belt and the challenges allow me to grow as an artist.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
What I love about Los Angeles is it’s diversity. I love how you can go from the mountains through the desert and into the ocean all in one day. That being said, you better start early because the traffic is real! LA is filled with people from all over the world bringing their individual creativity to one place. Whether it’s strolling the shops on Abbott Kinney, taking in the spectacular views and art at the Getty, slurping ramen on Sawtelle, hiking to the backside of the Hollywood sign, sipping a cocktail on a rooftop downtown, or grabbing some delicious Korean-inspired tacos from a food truck before a sunset drive up the PCH. There are hidden gems to be found all over this wonderful city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
