We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorelei Marcell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lorelei, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I try and not think about my career choice as a risk, so I feel like I have a fairly healthy relationship with risk taking, because most things in the industry revolve around risks. This is applicable to anyone in the music industry as well. Everyone is taking a massive risk. As well as anyone in the entertainment industry for that matter. I say this because talent, hard work, budget, etc. all play a big role, but at the end of the day it comes down to the right place right time. Success can’t be predicted necessarily, and I think that in itself is a big risk.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
This is a great question. I am definitely still up and coming and defining my brand, but I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot so far still being independent, and in some ways the journey is just starting. The thing I’m most excited for right now is all of the upcoming music I’m about to release. I can’t help but wonder where I will be in a year from now after it is all out into the world. I don’t think there is a conclusive answer as to how I got where I am right now, because creating my own music has been something I’ve been doing for years, even though to most people it might look like I just got started. It has not been easy, and it’s taken a lot of hard work and prioritizing. As someone who got started as a teenager / young adult it has been hard to choose my career over spending time with friends, late nights out, etc. but there has also been plenty of times where ‘work’ has been incredibly rewarding and fun. I think it is all about how you look at it. The most important things I’ve learned in the process however is that supporting yourself with the right team of people is incredibly important. Also, the right time to start is right now. This is something that has been a big part of my story. I feel like I started at a really young age, and I moved to LA right out of high school, but deep down I knew I was ready for this challenge. In someways age is telling, but in other ways it isn’t. If you’re ready, you’re ready!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As someone who lives in West Hollywood, they’re definitely a ton of things to do that are very close by. We would wake up early, because I’d want to go to my favorite coffee shop in the area which is called Harvey Eastons! It’s the best cold brew in town. Then I would probably take them to Runyon Canyon which is about a 2 to 3 mile hike in the hills! It has the best views of the city!! For food, I would probably have to order from this Mexican restaurant, called Gardens of Taxco. I’m a vegetarian, so I love their soy chorizo tacos. It’s the perfect mix of comfort food and a place to take friends. 🙂
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that have influenced my career up to this point, but I can confidently say there is one program that really sticks out. High school really defined me in a lot of ways, but the way I look at music is a big one. When I was a student I always enrolled myself in music classes, and though I did not attend an arts school, the program at my public school was really strong. I was in a madrigal choir group in high school, and while it’s very different from the style of music I create, it taught me a lot about collaboration and how to work with others to create art, as well as theory and ear training. I credit this group for the innate skill set that I use in my everyday life now.
