We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorenzo Ferrero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lorenzo, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’m originally from Lima, Peru, where access to quality music education was very limited during my early years. After the incredible opportunity to study at Berklee College of Music and develop my career as a saxophonist and composer in the US, I felt a strong desire to share my knowledge with others. I understood how challenging it can be for many people, especially in different countries, to access high-quality contemporary music education.
This drive led me to start creating workshops and giving lessons. In 2017, I ventured into the online world, sharing valuable information and tutorials, which received an enthusiastic response. This success inspired me to establish Tonealley Academy, an online platform where I offer courses, study packages, eBooks, and more. It all began with a deep urge to share my knowledge, and the positive reception of my social media posts encouraged me to build my online education business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey into the music world began in Lima, Peru, where I was exposed to jazz and classical music from a young age. This early exposure led me to pursue the tenor saxophone at 16. I later attended Berklee College of Music, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude.
After graduation, I moved to Vienna, Austria, and became a part of “The Snow Owl Quintet” and worked as a recording artist for Grammy-winning producer Georg Luksch. This period included composing for the Vienna University of Technology’s 200th Anniversary Ceremony. Later, in Los Angeles, I expanded my career as a session player, working with renowned artists like Eric Marienthal, Tom Scott, and Humberto Gatica. My film credits include “Detroit” (2017), “Wave of Crimes,” “45 RPM,” “The Three Wise Men: The Truth,” “El Presidente,” and “Mala Fortuna.”
One of my proudest achievements is co-founding The Afro Peruvian Jazz Orchestra, a 22-piece ensemble combining Afro Peruvian rhythms with traditional Big Band music. Our orchestra earned a Latin Grammy for Best Arrangement for “La Flor De La Canela.” This project highlights what sets my art apart: my Latin background combined with a passion for jazz and classical music. My music always incorporates Latin elements, paired with the complexity and structure of jazz and classical traditions. Additionally, I have a deep passion for big band and orchestral music.
Starting my career in a new country wasn’t easy. Moving to Los Angeles in 2015, I faced numerous challenges, including adapting to a new culture, learning new systems, and overcoming the struggles that this city has. People often see the successes but not the years of hard work, bad jobs, underpayments, and loneliness. Having a supportive partner and friends with similar backgrounds has been crucial to my journey.
I’m also very proud of Tonealley Academy, my online educational platform that grows every year. It’s a place where I share courses, study packages, and eBooks, helping students worldwide access high-quality music education. Another project I’m excited about is “LF & The Collective,” where I play my original music with some of the best musicians in LA. This band’s format ranges from a trio to an 8-piece ensemble.
A significant lesson I’ve learned is the importance of perseverance and surrounding yourself with supportive people. It’s essential to remain passionate about your work and stay true to your artistic vision, no matter the challenges. I invite everyone to check out our Grammy-nominated album “Tradiciones” by the Afro-Peruvian Jazz Orchestra and explore the offerings at Tonealley Academy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
first, I would take them to my favorite spots in LA, including ‘The Perch’ in downtown, a day trip to Santa Monica and Venice, and if they stay long enough, I would consider the PCH roudtrip or Yosemite national park, with a little stop in Paso Robles to visit some of my favorite do friendly wineries.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife, whom I met at Berklee College of Music, and is also a musician. She has supported me every step of the way, helping me become a better person and motivating me when I needed it the most. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.
