We had the good fortune of connecting with Lorie Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lorie, what do you want people to remember about you?
My legacy is acceptance as a pioneer. The things I did in my life were never popular when I did them. It took a lot of maturity and self discovery to accept that when you pave the way or when you are ahead of your time, you may never get recognition or receive your flowers for it. As I watch the historic rise in women’s basketball as they for the first time in history gained more viewership than the men’s championship game, I think back on my time as player when it was ignored and many times ridiculed. When I think about the things I went through as a black queer woman in the music industry; Times I was condemned or passed over because of my preference it pains me. But when I see this new generation being able to be themselves with out penalty it softens my heartache. I have come to embrace my journey regardless of how timing seemed to evade me. I cried a river, built a bridge and got over it. I now focus on my family, raising my 2 daughters (MiKayla and Malia) and work towards impacting my community in the most positive manner that I can. I want people to remember that I sacrificed my most coveted aspirations for the privilege of being myself. I did that at all costs and I don’t regret it. That’s a legacy I can stand behind and one of which I can be proud.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have always prided myself on adding to my arsenal of talents over the years. I started off as a triple threat. My mother kept me in a plethora of extracurriculars growing up. So naturally I continued to explore many things and ways to be creative. Most recently graduation from the Los Angeles Film School, I have added another trade/talent to my arsenal. I believe that is the thing that sets my art apart. I am confident enough to say that my creativity resembles that of people like Donald Glover and Issa Rae. With my art you will never get just one aspect. My music videos are likened to short films.

I am most proud of my work on stage. A Lorie Moore show is not like any other show. I won’t just be singing, or singing and dancing. There’s crowd work and comedy built in. Fun is guaranteed when I hit the stage. I am absolutely at home and there is no fear when performing at live events.

Getting to where I am today was not at all easy. I would say staying mentally tough was the key to getting this far. Working on your craft is one thing. But once you have your craft polished its not just an automatic ride to fame and fortune. The politics of the industry will challenge you in many ways. You must protect your mental health and stay committed to your goal.

Lessons I’ve learned along the way include understanding that you will never please everyone. So please yourself first and others will follow. Most of all don’t worry about those who don’t.

I’d like the world to know that my brand represents resilience and relentless pursuit of one’s goals. Throughout my life, people have told me that I don’t fit, that I’m too this or too that. I never let what others think of me determine the tenacity in which I go after my dreams. That is what HardWerk is all about.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Santa Monica Pier is a must. I’d probably have them come here and or Venice Beach multiple times during their stay.
The Grove in Beverly hills would be a nice leisure spot to shop and experience a fancy farmers market.
Hollywood Blvd tourism is always a fun adventure for out of towners to experience Hollyweird.
We’d explore Sunset Blvd and end up catching a comedy show at either the Laugh Factory or the Comedy Store.
Definitely have to hit Runyon Canyon for a scenic hike of great views.
Universal Studios is a must visit to see how Hollywood works and to ride a few rides.
LA Live / Crypto Arena – catch an NBA game
THE ALLEY – LA’S FASHION DISTRICT for a crazy shopping spree.

Eat at:
Katana’s of Sunset
Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles (either Hollywood or Inglewood locations)
Fixin’s (soul food)
Vurger Guys (vegan American food)
Pip’s on La Brea for brunch and for sunset live jazz music.
Perch DTLA – rooftop restaurant

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have many people to shoutout in tribute to the root of my success. I must first go back to my time in mentorship to shout out to Tisha Campbell, under who’s tutelage I mastered my craft on stage. She taught me not only skills in entertainment but also life gems that I refer to even to this day.

I also have to acknowledge the concepts and principles of Stoicism that helped to keep me focused on the things that matter. There was a time when depression reared its head in my life. By learning and gravitating to the teachings of wise people like Marcus Arelius in addition to the support of my family I found a way out of that fog.

I must shout out my village. I moved from Chicago to LA in 2005. My biological family at the time didn’t approve of my lifestyle so I had to make a family of my own. I found love got married and had children and our friends are our village. With that said people like Tasha and Diciembre Faries, Alexsis Glenn, Miesha Owens and their extended families are MY FAMILY. They are a big reason I stay motivated to do big things.

MOST OF ALL though.. my Shoutout belongs to my wife Sarde Stewart-Moore who has always been a motivating force in my life. She nurtures, cares for, motivates and challenges me all for the better. She is the biggest influence of my life. Her presence completes mine. I would not have made it nearly as far with out her.
