We had the good fortune of connecting with Lu Paul and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lu, how do you think about risk?
I’ve always been a big fan of risk-taking. I find it fun. The adrenalin of getting out of my comfort zone, not knowing exactly what is going to happen, and taking control of my own life. At first, of course, one is nervous… but the key is: whatever happens you know you tried. You won’t ever live thinking about “what if”. And that simply brings me peace, knowing I did everything I could in life. If I hadn’t taken risks and worked hard, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been a dreamer. I shoot to the stars and hope to at least land on the moon. I think one of the keys in life is not really caring what other people think… being free to be you and create something new. I feel my style is changing every day and I love that. The more I practice, the more interesting my work becomes. One of the main reasons why I got to where I am professionally today is because I believe in myself (sounds cliché, I know). So whenever I got rejected or didn’t get where I wanted, I never got upset. I always thought: “If it’s not today, it will be tomorrow”. It’s a better reason to keep on working my butt off, as I know eventually it’s going to happen. I definitely have to say that I am proud of myself, and even more, my 10 year-old-self would be my biggest fan.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I guess I would recommend grabbing a blank book and lots of markers and pencils and just getting lost. I think one of the most exciting things to do is not to plan everything. See where your day goes, draw people, try new food, get into random shops and explore. Did you ever hear about an adventure where the main character knows the end of the story?
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, big time. When I decided I wanted to be an illustrator it was something that wasn’t common at all. They believed in me and gave me the support to live my life dream. Wouldn’t have gone that far if it weren’t for them. Also my friend Nat Balza, we both dreamed of being illustrators… being around someone as passionate as one is crucial to dream big.
