We had the good fortune of connecting with Luana Venturino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luana, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I relocated to Los Angeles from Italy in 2015, I brought with me over three decades of experience in the restaurant business. However, I knew I wanted to channel my expertise in a different direction, one that didn’t involve the complexities and huge investments required to open and run a restaurant in California. I craved something more intimate and personal – a way to share my passion for Italian regional cuisine without the formal constraints of the restaurant business. Being a people person, I wanted to create an environment where I could directly engage with individuals, sharing not only my culinary skills but also the rich heritage of Italian cuisine and hospitality. The solution was clear: offering private culinary classes and then having my guests eat together around the chef’s table. These experiences allow guests to feel like part of my extended family, where laughter, joy and connection are as important as the food itself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Moving to a new country and starting over was far from easy, but the positive feedback from my guests has kept me going. People here crave more than just Italian food—they want the experience of Italian hospitality and warmth. My dishes are simple and authentic, but what sets me apart is the way I bring the heart of Italy into every meal and a solid experience. Embracing a new culture and adapting to a new language was challenging. I had to retrain my mind and stay flexible. I began collaborating with Cozymeal, and quickly became a top-rated chef on their platform, which has been the result of my commitment to hospitality. What I’ve learned is that representing my culinary heritage is a big responsibility. Each experience I create allows me to share more than just food; it’s an opportunity to bring Italy’s rich traditions to life and offer guests an authentic taste of Italian culture.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If friends were visiting me, I’d make sure they experienced the perfect blend of LA’s iconic landmarks, vibrant culture, and incredible food scene. We’d start with a visit to the Griffith Observatory for stunning views of the city and, of course, the Hollywood Sign—a must for any first-time visitor. Then, we’d head downtown for a stop at The Last Bookstore, a quirky and fun spot that appeals to both adults and kids. While we’re there, I’d make sure to visit the Disney Concert Hall, the Music Center and The Broad for one of its special exhibits. Mid-Wilshire would be next on the list. One of my favorite spots is LACMA, especially in the summer when we can enjoy a homemade picnic and aperitivo on the lawn while enjoying a Latin Jazz concert. It’s a quintessential LA experience—relaxed, cultural, and full of wonderful energy. Food is so incredibly diverse here, so I’d make sure to hit some local favorites: authentic taco spots, sushi bars, and cool coffee shops for some serious people-watching and maybe celebrity spotting. And, of course, I’d host a few meals at my place to give them a taste of Italy, LA-style!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to a few important people in my life, starting with my family. My maternal grandmother deserves special recognition, as she was the one who taught me everything I know about regional cuisine. While running my restaurant in Italy, I had the privilege of being surrounded by incredible women from my community, who generously shared their culinary secrets and techniques with me. Losing my mother at a young age meant that I had to take charge of the family kitchen far earlier than expected. My grandmother and some of these women stepped in to fill the gaps in my knowledge, and I owe much of my success to them. I also want to thank my family here in Los Angeles, especially my grandchildren, who have always encouraged me to share my love for food with others. They remain my most important “clients” and continue to be my greatest supporters.
