Meet Lucrezia Venturelli | Furniture Designer and Maker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucrezia Venturelli and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucrezia, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by the challenge of reimagining traditional or obsolete objects within a contemporary environment. My creativity is driven by the question: how would this piece look and function today? For example, my current project, the Treasure Collection, draws inspiration from the Secretaire, a type of furniture that appeared in the 19th century when upper-class members commissioned cabinets and desks with hidden compartments and mechanical devices to safeguard valuables like jewelry, love letters, and important documents. The thrill for me lies in modernizing this concept while preserving its essence.
Additionally, I have a deep passion for surface design and 3D textures, which I apply throughout my work. I constantly draw inspiration from my surroundings, collecting patterns that spark new ideas and enrich my creative process.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My practice exists on the fine line between design and art. When people look at my work, they often find it hard to distinguish whether I create sculptures or functional pieces, and I think that’s what makes my work unique. I take pride in blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technology and combining time-honored techniques with CNC machining and 3D sculpting. This fusion allows me to push the boundaries of form and function, creating pieces that feel both familiar and entirely new.
Being a creative with an independent business is never easy. It takes time, skill, hard work, and a fair bit of luck to find the right audience and get things off the ground. The best you can do is keep going, stay true to your vision, and never compare your journey to someone else’s. Success comes at its own pace, you’ll get there when the time is right.
If there’s one thing I want others to know about me, it’s that I believe once you find what truly drives your creativity and passion, you’ll never stop. It becomes an inseparable part of who you are, and the only way forward is to keep creating.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I believe that every person we encounter in life, whether directly or indirectly, shapes who we become, both personally and professionally, and to me these two aspects are deeply connected. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has played a role in my journey: my parents, for never clipping my wings and encouraging my curiosity from a young age; my teachers, both in school and in life, for their honest and constructive criticism; and my friends, who restored my confidence and reassured me when I questioned whether I belonged. Their support has been essential in getting me to where I am today.
