We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucy London McDonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lucy London, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The greatest factor towards the success of my art is collaboration. I am friends with so many other visual artists and getting to learn from each other is invaluable. I’ve gotten to work with so many amazing creatives, models, stylists and make up artists who have all become very close friends of mine. Creating a community that encourages each other and doesn’t strictly see each other as competition has always pushed me forward, and I don’t know who I would be without my amazing collaborators.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to think that a constant tool I use when creating any form of art is the concept of character building. I like to create pieces of work where you can make assumptions about the subjects depicted. I’ve always loved campy and over the top movies because of the strong sense of self we get from these characters..Whether it comes to costuming, props, or the general facial expression of my subjects, I always have a clear idea of who these characters are that I’m creating. Along with adding a bit of color and humor to my work, characterization of my subjects is key to my practice.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting LA I would encourage them to visit either Lacma or the Broad for some amazing art installations as well as the Grove for eclectic food options as well as minor celebrity spotting.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give special recognition and thanks to two of my friends Orchid and Elias Martian. before I have met them, I had already been a huge fan of their amazing and eclectic styling work. After a chance meeting a few years ago I had the opportunity To collaborate with them a couple projects. Feeling recognition and support from two people I admired meant so much to me, and boosted my confidence enough to start putting myself out there and pitching ideas to businesses and brands.
