We had the good fortune of connecting with Lulise and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lulise, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Being and independent artist in 2021 basically means you run your own record label. When you think of your favorite artist you might think of how talented they are, how well they perform or how much you love their song writing. Well talent, performance and songwriting is literally the tip of the ice berg. Here’s a list of things an independent artist has to do/pay for that you may be unaware of; hiring photographers/taking your own pictures, paying for music video directors/editing your own videos, making a constant stream of content on top of original releases, paying for producers/producing music themselves, recording vocals themselves in their home studios, paying for home studio equipment, paying a stylist/ doing your own hair and make up & styling for videos and photo shoots, submitting your music to every blog that takes submissions, pitching to playlists, booking shows, paying musicians…the list goes on! All while having usually 2 or more part time jobs. And all for the love of music because unless you’re getting millions of streams, you’re not seeing much return on your investment. Independent artists are my super heroes. The best way to give back to them is to stream, share & repeat.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am so excited to finally be releasing my first single of the year “Glasses” coming March 18th to all streaming platforms! I wrote this song in 2019 as a brutally honest look at my love life…getting my heart broken over guys who showed me all their red flags from the beginning that I was just too blind to see! So blind that I said “next time I fall in love I’m wearing glasses.” Haha it’s not always easy realizing ugly truths about myself but there is beauty in sharing my stories through songwriting and getting to laugh and sing and connect with people because of them. With a heavy Musiq Soulchild influence I hope Glasses makes you move and groove AND improves your love life 🙂

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My manager Alexandra Lee is the reason I am where I am today. She saw talent in me years ago and believed that my wild dreams were possible with a lot of hard work. She was originally my vocal coach so she taught me proper vocal technique that I still use to this day. She encouraged me to play piano, guitar & write songs which I used to be terrified of but now am so thankful for because writing and playing instruments has truly transformed my artistry. I am so lucky to have such a strong, dedicated, badass woman as my manager.
