We had the good fortune of connecting with Lydia Gomez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lydia, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I had my first crafting class in 5th grade, which focused on crocheting. I fell in love with being able to use my hands to create something useful. Since then I’ve pursued any art electives available in middle school, high school, collage and during my free time. I had a blast creating whimsical, wacky and vibrant artwork. As an adult, I began asking myself important and practical questions to determine my career path. It became clear to me that teaching offered me various opportunities for creativity and teaching children. After realizing that I could possibly create my own opportunity, I set out to carve out a niche for myself in online teaching while at the same time nurturing my creativity.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Birdie Learning Academy is a trusted and inclusive online educational service that strives to make a positive and long-lasting impact in a child’s education. We focus on personalized instruction, skill-building programs and maintaining a nurturing environment. In this way we empower our students to thrive academically and reach their full potential.
I am most proud of what sets us apart from other educational services, which is our commitment to providing a personalized and holistic learning experience for our students and their families. We go beyond traditional education by offering a customized service tailored to each student’s unique needs and interests. With our teaching approach and emphasis on inclusion, diversity and curiosity, we create a nurturing environment that sets us apart from the rest.
It hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been numerous ups and downs, but I’ve come to realize that they are an integral part of the journey. As a first-generation Latina, I don’t have direct access to individuals who have started their own businesses, which often leaves me feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. Each challenge that arises takes me some time to resolve, but I tackle them as I go, striving to make wiser decisions based on what I learn. I’ve discovered the importance of asking for help and seeking guidance when needed.
I continue to read and watch videos to learn from others who are further along in their entrepreneurial journey, finding it both motivating and highly educational.
I have overcome challenges by persevering on this path, even when fear, nerves, insecurity, impatience, and confusion arise—yes, it can get quite chaotic! But sticking with it, despite the difficulties, remains one of the most challenging yet rewarding aspects of my journey
The world should know that my brand, Birdie Learning Academy, is not just another online educational platform. Not only are we dedicated to building a sustainable and ethically fair company but it represents a deeply personal story of passion, creativity, and the pursuit of a meaningful career.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would recommend exploring one of my favorite parts of Southern California, which includes Pasadena and its neighboring towns. From there, we could make our way towards the coast, visiting places like Malibu and the Pike in Long Beach. For food suggestions, I would recommend trying the Chinese cuisine at Grandview Palace, enjoying a steak at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, or indulging in tacos at King Taco in Pasadena.
As for drinks, Guildhall is a great spot with a wide selection of board games to enjoy. For breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Lola’s Kitchen in Mission Hills, San Fernando, is a fantastic choice, and I highly recommend their BBQ pulled pork sandwich. It’s delicious! Additionally, the Pasadena/Altadena area offers beautiful hiking trails by the beach and mountains.
After exploring this area, a visit to Nobu in Malibu would be a great opportunity to savor the best Japanese food at Nobu or steak (yes, I love steak!) at Mastro’s, followed by a walk along the beach.
In Santa Monica, there is a spot with a bunch of swings that is really fun, especially during the evening. You get the best view of the Santa Monica Ferris wheel and the sunset. Finally, I would suggest visiting the Pike for a short and relaxing boat ride, enjoying lunch at one of the local spots, and then heading to a nearby bar for drinks.
One of the reasons I love California is its diversity, which is reflected in our cuisines, including Mexican, Japanese, Korean, and more. Also, the scenic beauty is unmatched, offering mountains, beaches, vibrant cities, and the peaceful countryside in rural areas.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to extend my gratitude and give credit to my parents, siblings and my husband. My parents paved a pivotal role in enabling me to pursue a higher education, which has opened doors to vast learning opportunities not only academically but also personal growth. They are my role models and I am privileged to continue to learn and be guided by them.
My siblings have been an incredible source of inspiration by providing me an exemplary path to learn from. Additionally, my husband has been remarkably supportive and nurturing as I navigate self-employment. He’s taught me valuable lessons in maintaining focus on my goals. He provides me with so much motivation and encouragement for which I am grateful.
