We had the good fortune of connecting with Lyric Brklyn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lyric, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I definitely believe that risk taking is very important as an entrepreneur because you will never know until you try. It is always important to calculate the risks and the potential results to see if it is worth taking. Risk taking has played a major role in my success and has given me so many opportunities to grow and learn as an entrepreneur. For example, I took a big risk in the beginning of my entrepreneurship journey when I invested all of my money to begin my business. Of course I wasn’t 100% sure if it would succeed, but I was willing to take that risk.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Swoop Control is a black teen owned hair care brand that I started with my 13th birthday money. When I thought about what kind of product I wanted to sell and what kind of brand I wanted to create, I knew it needed to be something that would connect to millions of women and girls who look like me. What makes swoop control stand out from many other hair care brands is that most hair care brands that are aimed towards the black community are owned by nonblack people. These nonblack people usually do not understand what we go through. As a young African American with type 4 hair I definitely understand the struggle and how hard it can be to find the perfect products for our hair. This is exactly why I take pride in providing the best hair care products and accessories for women of color. Something I am most proud of is the connection I’ve built with women of color through my brand. I know it may sound super cliche, but all of the progress and success I’ve ever made business-wise was through staying consistent and taking advantage of all of the opportunities I was given to network and better my business. Entrepreneurship isn’t and will never be easy. In my opinion it’s probably one of the hardest jobs. You must remain self motivated, unafraid of failure and learn to always look at everything as a lesson. Everything is about perspective,
you can either look at a mistake as a lesson and learn from it or let it break you and stay in the same exact position. Throughout my entrepreneurship journey I’ve learned that nothing is ever given to you, if you want something you have to go out and work for it. Remember to always stay consistent no matter what! Remember that it’s okay to start out small, and to never compare yourself, especially to people in the social media world. Many people lack transparency and only show the glitz and glams of being an entrepreneur.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When coming to the city of Philadelphia for the first time I think it is always important for first timers to try two of many things and that is a good Philly cheese steak and a cup of Philly water ice. It’s literally A MUST! First place I would take someone visiting Philly for the first time is Center City to see Philadelphia’s history and then to South St for an awesome food & shopping experience. With the right people Philadelphia can be an amazing experience.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to my parents for always believing in me and supporting me in everything I’ve ever wanted to do. From when Swoop Control was just an idea, they’ve done nothing but help as much as they could and support me and my brand in every way possible. I know they will read this so thank you Mom & Dad for everything!
