We had the good fortune of connecting with Lytel Young, Realtor/Interior Designer, and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lytel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Growing up in Delaware, I was always interested in the arts, music, colors, and design. I remember watching the Oscars and Music Awards, imagining myself at the show – spending countless hours singing Michael Jackson songs in our family basement. I can still hear my siblings telling me to be quiet. There were days my mother would come home from work only to find that I had rearranged the living room furniture entirely. I was always expressing myself creatively. Throughout my middle and high school years, I was enrolled in Conservatory School, where I studied piano and voice. I was the talented jokester/entertainer in a family of 5 siblings, and I kept everyone entertained. Being creative is innate; it’s a drive inside me that I get to express in everything I do. Whether designing space for a client, previous host of my own HGTV show, finding a client their forever home, or listing a home, I always bring a creative perspective and passion to any situation.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Being a Realtor is a unique entrepreneurial profession. Essentially you’re running your own company, and YOU are the brand. Everything you do, say, and accomplish reflects who you are. I’m in the business of facilitating one of the most significant purchases a person can make in their lifetime. I lead with trust and integrity. My north star is being my authentic self. I make no excuses for who I am, and I know I can’t please everyone. However, this is what I know – there is only one me.

My background as an interior designer gives me knowledgeable insight when walking a property with clients offering them my suggestions and ideas that most can’t see. I’m a great listener, which in my opinion, has played a big part in my professional life/career. Being a black man in any business/profession has its challenges; however, nothing comes easy. I’ve overcome many obstacles by knowing my worth and always giving my absolute best in everything I do. My priority is to explain what I do, how I do it, and why it works. Real estate is all about storytelling, and I have a hell of a story to tell!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles has so many beautiful places to eat, drink and visit. I would start with an outdoor lunch at Great White in Larchmont, with great food and energy, then a quick walkthrough Larchmont. Happy hour drinks at SoulMate on Robertson Blvd in West Hollywood. Tuesday morning, have breakfast at Opsero restaurant on Sunset Blvd at The Pendry Hotel. Afternoon lunch at Tocaya Modern Mexican on Sunset Blvd. Wednesday, grab an afternoon lunch at the Edition Hotel rooftop with incredible views from DTLA to the Pacific ocean, then happy hour/dinner at Ysabel restaurant on Fairfax Ave. On Thursday, we would head over to The Chateau Marmont for early drinks in the garden, which usually turns into dinner, enjoying conversation until 10-11 pm. Friday, happy hour at Stache on Santa Monica Blvd and grab a bite for dinner. Of course, a gym workout at Equinox every morning is non-negotiable. Santa Monica Beach on Saturday with a group of friends having wine and light bites and smiles and laughter. The itinerary would look something like that.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for my parents; Both parents have influenced me in so many ways. My dad led by example, meaning his work ethic was very disciplined and measured. He had a very successful career. My mother encouraged me to do what made me happy; she was always there every step of the way. Every moment, highlight, failure, and achievement have always been my motivation. So you’re probably scratching your head, asking what does that mean. Well, there were times when I thought things weren’t going to work out and when those moments came, something would happen in my life, signaling me to keep going and not give up. I can’t say that one book or person has influenced me the most. However, I believe my success and failures, relationships, and encounters have been rewarding and invaluable to the person I am today.
