We had the good fortune of connecting with M.r. Fitzgerald and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi M.r., why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
For as long as I can remember, I always made up stories in my head. Even as a young child growing up on a Minnesotan organic farm, I would think of characters and adventures for them to go on and I could visualize it all clear as day. As I grew older and took in more media such as movies, music, and books I eventually learned that I could take all of the things in my head and project them out in the form of artwork, a piece of music, or short novels. Once I attended Art School where a group of friends and I made a stop motion film together, I realized immediately that filmmaking was the true way I could use images, words, and sounds combined to finally fully express myself and the things I was seeing and feeling inside.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art deals with the lasting effects of trauma and setting things right in the aftermath. I find that journey fascinating in others and it also allows me to find the catharsis of that very journey within myself. As a lifelong lover of the scares of horror, the thrills of action-adventure, and the beautiful thoughtfulness of art cinema, my films combine elements of each in order to make the audience think about their place in the universe and in the scheme of humanity while also having an entertaining time. Devouring books as well as maintaining a strong work ethic has gotten me through many hurdles and I’m excited to continue to utilize both artistic and genre filmmaking to convey a hopeful message of overcoming adversity for viewers. Enlisting the help of creative friends who gave me feedback and encouragement has kept me going as well. The greatest lesson I’ve learned is to pursue your greatest interests and passions even though it can be the most difficult path imaginable. The act of creating and filmmaking helped me overcome heartbreaking hardships that risked stripping away who I am as a person, therefore, my goal is to use my filmmaking brand to help others from having the same thing happen to them. Exposing dark elements of human nature and assisting people in coming to terms with a painful past and give them a sense of empathy and closure.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friend better get ready for some Hollywood fun! On the first day, I would take them for a hike around the Hollywood sign, get a SPICY dinner at Killer Noodle Tsujita or some sushi at SUGARFISH, then end the night with drinks at Good Times by Davey Wayne’s. The next day, I’d show them around Hollywood Blvd. where we’d stroll the Walk of Fame, do a little shopping, see a movie at TCL Chinese Theatre, get a cocktail at Boardners, then end the night with Korean BBQ. On the final day, we’d grab a coffee to go from Coffee Bean, fill up the gas tank, and drive to Malibu to check out the gorgeous ocean side view and some local eats. There’s a thrillingly fast pace as well as a beautiful variety of diversity in Los Angeles and I want to share that magical experience with whoever visits.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give the most heartfelt shout-out to those throughout my creative journey who would set me up with a playground if you will, where I could do my own thing while also pushing myself to be better at my craft. University of Minnesota Morris’ Studio Art & Art History divisions educated me to visualize my projects as well as analyze art in general while having the discipline to write and present my findings academically. They also encouraged me to promote myself as an artist which has been useful in my filmmaking career to this day. Ohio University’s SOUP aka Student Organization of Undergrad Playwrights enabled me to expand storytelling with effective dialogue, lay down my heart and soul on the page, not be afraid of presenting it in front of a big audience, and, most importantly, have fun too. Seeing my words go from the page to being performed on the stage is an experience that I will always appreciate. And, finally, big kudos to my friends and colleagues who have stayed with me and didn’t treat me differently throughout the highs and lows of my creative journey.
